when can i try flying brand new birds?

when can i fly them i know they have to get use to the area but
are we looking at 3 weeks, 3 months, a year?? they are adults,
but new to this area ( i just bought them ) also what is the
best way to get them comfortable in there pin? what and how much
food should i feed them?
My 4 year old and i are really amped about this new hobby and
ready to buy more birds but we wont to do it right

Hey T.J., Welcome to the site. Homing adult birds can be a bit
tough with the possibility of loss. I would recomend not flying
but breeding them in the spring and flying their young. I know
that is a long time and you want to see them in the air! So... I
assume your flight box has traps installed. Start by placing
them through the traps, over and over, until they will run
through when placed in front of the trap. Then ( or now, for
safety ) tape the first five flight feathers near the wing root
with blue painters tape. Use the 3/4" and then tape over that
with another layer of medical tape. The blue tape will not cause
as much feather damage and the medical tape locks the whole
together. Place the birds on top of the kit box when they are
hungry and then feed them and let them trap on their own if they
will. Leave them out for a set amount of time when you would fly
them in the future. Then feed and let trap. Follow this routine
for at least two weeks, remove the tape on one bird and place
all of them on the box. DO NOT MAKE THEM FLY! Feed and trap.
Repeat this with the remaining birds until all are settled. They
will start taking short hops around the yard and father out to
learn where home is. When they start flying on their own and
trapping when fed. you can flag them off of the box as a kit if
they are not flying as one on their own. Caution, when they are
on the box with their wings taped they are easy prey for cats,
hawks,..... do not leave them out alone.

i agree with thom and i want to add raise a kit of young birds
and raise 25-30 birds and fly them out and keep the best and fly
them.....................donnie james

Hi TJ adult birds take longer to Home in more likely to lose--
don't t take chance on losing them just raise some from them
first-- fly them or find someone that has young squeaker Kit for
sale will take about 1 month to home them in-- take time don't
get in BIG HURRY you will lose lots of them if you HURRY. Where

Do you tape both wings or just one? This is my first year
raising pigeons and every time I try to train a couple more
youngsters they spend the first night outside. I starve them
for a day but they still wont come in the first day. After that
they seem fine(they come straight in after flying). I worry
cause they are vulnerable to predators all night. Thank you for
this site I have learned a ton, although this is my first post.

vwsrph, if you tape both wings they are balanced and can still
fly, not very well but enough to get into trouble. Only tape one
wing and they will not be able to go very far. That way you can
catch them and place them back in the kit box over night. BUT,
watch them very close as they are helpless.

YES I tape last 3 flight feathers on both wings others just do 1
wing--are you setting young birds on trap board in a cage for at
least 1 week before you turn them lose to trap on ther own--
when feeding time push in trap a few times before feeding then
with wings taped set on landing board or on top of kit box--
don't scare up just let them learn will take a few days to week
then remove tape and they will start to fly around. --- GOD

Thanks to both of you. I think I need to be more patient. If
they go in once I figure they have it. I'll let them go in for
a week or so next time. Thanks again.

im new to this site too but i have flown birds of my own and
they trap in consistently very fast. all i did was left my trap
door to the coop open with a cage on it for a week when i seen
them using the trap by themselves i knew they were getting used
to the coop. then i taped there wing ( 5 flights one one wing).
them i didn't feed them for about 36 hours before letting them
out. and i let them out through the trap. lock them on the trap
with the cage on after about 10 min take the cage off slowly and
just let them do whatever they want for 30 min then call them
in. with there wing taped they know not to go very far just
don't scare them away. and make sure you let them out an hour
before dark this helps keep them around. pigeons don't like the
dark. BRO I PROMISE THIS WORKS after doing the tape for two
weeks just to be safe. take it off and let them out the same way
for two more weeks. then you can start to scare them up iuf you
want. one month and they will be in the air
