I haven't had luck with tobacco stems either. Pigeons don't like
them. They are too coarse and bulky and hard for the birds to
shape into a nest....

I agree on the tobacco stems. When I had homers, they loved them
but the rollers wouldn't use them. Pine needles are the best
nesting material I have found.
Keep em spinning

Just my two cents....Pine needles work great but aren't always
availabe. I've had great luck with tobacco stems after I cut
them in to shorter lengths.

I can see it now, Paul drives down the road in his 57 t-bird,
stops in front of Starbucks and wearing a long european fliers
loft coat gets a capuccieno. When he comes out he stares into
the camara and says, "I don't often drink coffee when I'm caring
for my rollers, but when I do- I prefer Starbucks. (and long
flexible pine needles fall from the sky like confettie but none
land in his cup as he raises it and tilts it in recognition to
the camera) Stay thirsty my friends.............and Rock and
roll!! and the rest is history...........The most intersting man
in the world commercials have met thier match! That was fun.
Paul Conway. Yep, I'm procrastinating switching my loft
floor from wood chips to sand. think I'll go do that now.

That was cool, Paul! I have used nothing but sand for five
years, into my sixth year. I love it! I made a 16x16 inch
strainer from 1/4 inch hardware cloth on a wooden frame to
remove the large bits, then I run it through a large kitchen
seive, done! :)
I think you will like it.
Take care

Pine needles are the best. I have used tobacco stems. I cut
them in half and the birds used them just fine. Given a choice
the birds will use the pine needles.

We use Pine Needles and Eucalyptus(spelling?) and the birds love
them! Plus the loft smells great! lol
Why sand instead of wood shavings if you don't mind my asking?

Flyemhi33, I use sterilized play sand, $2.97 for 50 lbs.. It
does not hold odor, works like cat litter and will clump around
any spilt liquid and does not blow around. I clean my loft
everyday, ( I'm retired) in about 30 min.
Take care
Thom
