Ive had three pair of birds in my breeding coop for about a
month. one pair has just hatched there eggs. one pair has laid
one egg but it broke that was about three weeks ago, none sense.
the other pair has never laid an egg yet they both are adults
and definable a pair, they hang out together all the time, the
cock always protects her and he will fight any bird that comes
close to her. my mating coop is 5 feet tall 5 feet wide and 4
feet deep. and im thinking about adding a pair to the coop in a
week or two. good idea or not?

Don't use Hay...Hay holds moisture, promotes mold and bugs love
it. You can use Tobacco stems (pigeon supply store) or use the
long pine needles. Tobacco stems and pine needles repel moisture
and bugs don't like them...the pigeons do.

I use hay for nests with no problems what so ever, I have tried
differant materials and hay works the best for me. The birds
like the grass hay more than a hard stem type, if you think
about it, most wild birds use grass or hay all the time. One
thing you should not use is the black colored nest pads, there
has been many reports of chicks dieing just after hatching. No
proof that the pads cause them to die, just a lot of
speculation.

I agree with Paul, pine needles or tobacco stems are better than
hay or straw. Hay and straw are hollow and with hold moisture
which facilitates microbial growth. I have also used kitty
litter in nest bowls, but I didnt like it.
Sand in the bottom of the bowl, with needles for nest material
in my opinion is the healthiest and best.

Hey Lew...you are right most wild birds use grass and hay..but
then you have to ask yourself...what is the mortality rate of
wild birds compared to domesticated birds.....there is a reason
that lots of wild baby birds die in the nest....parasites, mold
and moisture is a big one....
The long Pine needles are not very hard....I just bend them into
a bowl shape....My pigeons go Ape Sh*%t over the pine
needles....they fight over them...steal them from each
other....Mine did not like Tobacco stems for some reason.
