"Juicing" The Drinking Fountain

Adding supplements to water that enhance and promote health and
well-being can be a good and proactive part of any loft
management program. Depending on the products used, the cost can
be minimal especially compared to buying name brand medications
to cure what might have been prevented.
For the most part juicing can be cheap. Health is both
maintained and promoted. A smart and practical habit for the new
fancier or the old hand. What sort of "juicing" have you done to
promote good health in your birds and what sort of changes to
better health did you observe?

red cell 1 or 2 days week in the drinking water, acv. every day
except when i use red cell .....

I use ACV, crushed garlic, iodine in the water approx weekly for
breeders. From this I get a general improvment in health, a
resistance to desease, and good hatchability from eggs. I put Ca
gluconate in water for hens I am pulling eggs to foster.
I use a vitaimin in water and or a vitamineral powder fro
breeders during moult. My hope is to promote health as well as
ensure quality feather growth. I dont know how helpful it is
though, if there was a difference, I couldnt tell. I use vitamin
in water for kit birds monthly and/or as a prep for fly.
This year for the first time I am using probios and red cell
weekly. Results undetermined thus far, except that I am weaning
healthy looking young and have thus far not had any sick or weak
youngsters.

Here is an article on Apple Cider Vinegar that might be
informative:
[font=Times New Roman]Ancient cultures used vinegar for its
medical benefits and it was used for healing bruises,
disinfecting wounds, snake and insect bites. Vinegar is
antiseptic which kills germs on contact and also antibiotic.
Apple cider vinegar contains over thirty important nutrients, a
dozen minerals, more that half a dozen vitamins and essential
acids and several enzymes, which makes apple cider vinegar a
substance that contains many outstanding qualities that are
beneficial to you and to your rollers.[/font]
[font=Times New Roman]A[/font][font=Times New Roman]pple cider
vinegar can provide you and your rollers with enzymes and
important minerals, such as potassium, calcium, magnesium,
sulfur, chlorine, phosphorus, iron, silicon and many trace
minerals. It also contains vitamin P (bioflavonoid), vitamin A
(beta-carotene), and vitamin C, E, B1, B2 and B6. It also
contains malic acid, tannins, tartaric acid, propionic acid,
acetic acid and pectin. Most importantly, apple cider vinegar
will help prevent the growth of bacteria or fungal growth on
fresh foods and water.[/font]
[font=Times New Roman]The Encyclopedia of Natural Pet Care
describes apple cider vinegar in this way: “Long a folk remedy,
cider vinegar has been shown to improve the health of dairy
cows, horses, dogs, and other animals and birds. It reduces
common infections, aids whelping, improves stamina, prevents
muscle fatigue after exercise, increase resistance to disease
and protects against food poisoning…It normalizes acid levels
[pH] in the stomach, improves digestion and assimilation of
nutrients, reduces intestinal and fecal odors, help cure
constipation, alleviates some symptoms of arthritis and help
prevent bladder stones and urinary tract infections.”[/font]
[font=Times New Roman]Apple cider vinegar is often called one of
Mother Nature’s most perfect foods. Natural apple cider
vinegar, found in health stores, should be a rich amber color
with the “mother” quite visible as sentiment on the bottom. The
strength of vinegar is important. All varieties of vinegar
contain about 4 to 7 percent acetic acid, which gives vinegar
its tart and sour taste. Apple cider vinegar destroys
microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, viruses and others,
and prevents poisons from reaching the rest of the systems of
the body. It has been proven to inhibit the growth of
germ-negative bacilli, Pseudomonas, and Candida.

[font=Times New Roman]The acid nature of vinegar makes the
digestive tract environment unpleasant for germs and fungus.
Apple cider vinegar has proven to be a natural treatment and
preventative in simple cases of avian pediatric digestive
disorders. Dr. D. C. Jarvis, MD. Who wrote “Folk Medicine, A
Vermont Doctor’s Guide to Good health”, through his own research
believes that apple cider vinegar will lower bloods natural
alkalinity, bringing it closer to a natural healthy acid state.
[/font] [font=Times New Roman]A naturally acidic digestive
tract, with the correct pH balance, will discourage bacteria and
is less likely to grow yeast and fungus. The acidic qualities
of AVC will help break down protein, in the digestive system,
for absorption into the bloodstream.[/font]
[font=Times New Roman]Proper hygiene is important in maintaining
rollers health. The environment we provide for our birds is
totally different from the wild. Pigeons in the wild are
acclimated to the bacteria found in their natural environment
but its body has no experience in providing immunity to the
bacteria commonly found in the unnatural environment we provide
for them.

[font=Times New Roman]That includes humanly transmitted
bacteria, normal tap water, unsanitized food dishes and cages.
Plain old white distilled vinegar will help reduce the toxic
load in our environment. Vinegar is an organic, biodegradable,
nontoxic substance. Vinegar can be used routinely and safely in
the rollers loft as an effective cleaning and disinfecting
agent.[/font]
[font=Times New Roman]In conclusion, AVC is a solution of acidic
acid produced by fermentation of apples. AVC contains
cholesterol reducing pectin and the perfect balance of 19
minerals, including potassium, phosphorus, chlorine, sodium,
magnesium, calcium among others. There are great benefits from

and expecting guests to arrive soon and notice that your cooking
has caused quite a stink in the house, just add a bit of vinegar
to the boiling water while cooking. This works great for
odor-causing foods such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower or
Brussel sprouts. To remove the strong smell of foods, such as
onion, garlic or fish from your hand, try washing them in apple
cider vinegar and the smell will vanish.
If your child brings home a stinky lunchbox, try placing a paper
towel dampened with vinegar in the lunchbox and leave it

New Roman] the lunchbox in the morning and it should smell

I don't use anything at all .. but then I am on the lazy side,
especialy this time of year when it is so dry . The biggest
factor for a healthy loft is not bringing in outside pigeons.
When I do use an additive it is ACV which is acidic , couple
that with a acidic loft dressing and you knock down the spread
of bacteria big time . ACV is the only thing that I am sure of
being a benifit .. for me all else just is a waste of money
other than a source of good gut bacteria which I will use if I
suspect a problem beginning.

I started adding ACV to my waterers at the rate of one
tablespoon per gallon last year and I have not had any sick
birds since then. Check out this article by Dr. Colin Walker

[font=arial]One of the ways that the bowel protects itself from
disease is through the maintenance of a weakly acidic
environment. They are able to do this because many of the normal
bacteria present, such as Lactobacillus, produce lactic acid.
With stress the Lactobacilli are one of the first bacteria to be
lost and so acid production falls and pH rises resulting in a
less acidic bowel. Potentially disease causing organisms such as
E.coli, Salmonella and yeast don’t survive well in an acidic
environment and so the loss of this acidic environment creates a
window of opportunity for these to establish and multiply.
Anything that re-establishes the normal acidic environment
quickly, minimises the chances of disease. One way of doing this
is by adding acids to the birds drinking water. Initially this
may seem a little bit strange, however, if done correctly it can
be advantageous.
There are dose rates available for acids such as hydrochloric
acid, however, as these acids can be quite dangerous to handle
their use is not encouraged. There are two acids commonly used.
One is acetic acid. This is available as apple cider vinegar at
your local supermarket and the dose rate is 5ml per litre.
Alternatively, citric acid can be used. This can be purchased as
a white powder from the chemist ( we also stock it at the Knox
Bird Clinic). Here the usual dose used is 1 teaspoon (3grams) to
6 litres of water. It is interesting that many of the older bird
books recommend the use of acids and suggest squeezing lemon
juice or adding other sources of citric acid to the birds
drinker. Some old secrets still work well today.
Used correctly, acids can do the birds no harm. Fanciers can use
them in a number of ways. Either to treat the birds when they
are diagnosed with E.coli or “thrush” (yeast) where they are a
handy way of controlling mild infection without resorting to
antibiotics. Alternatively, if the loft has on going problems, a
fancier can put them in the water for one or two days per week
as part of an ongoing health management programme, say on a
Wednesday and Sunday. Also, if fanciers experience predictable
yeast or other bowel problems following stress, say for example,
following periods of cold damp weather in an open loft, then
when these conditions occur he can put the acids in the water
for one or more days to head problems off.
With mild yeast or bacterial bowel upsets the use of acids often
results in the production of tight brown nut-like droppings with
reduced odour and a healthier looking bird. A failure to respond
indicates a more serious problem and veterinary assistance may
be required. [/font][/td][/tr][/table]

My foxhounds, chickens and now pigeons all get ACV in thier
water unless I'm worming, etc. The field trialers talked to
me about giving my foxhounds, red cell, etc to keep thier
stamina up. My hounds will run from 6am- to 12 midnight (hard)
if I don't catch them up when I'm getting them out 3-4 times a
week on good feed and clean water with ACV in it why would I
want them any peppier??? Paul Conway

i use to use epsom salt and i haven't use it in years but
thinking to start back up after the molt but i use some vitamin
in the drinking water though the molt as well right before
breeding season and after breeding season donny jamesc
