Horner Birds-Not Flying

Has anyone had problem in getting Horner birds to fly? These
are young birds, but will only fly about 4 minutes then back to
the top of the loft. Flagg them and again 4 or 5 minutes, back
to the roof again.
Feeding 22 birds about a cup of wheat a day.

if there not at less 5 months old they need more feed , and
better feed...

Up the feed to two cups a day and stop just feeding nothing but
wheat. Use a mix of 16% and you will have better results.

Quailtail,
Could be the heat, too, if it's hot where you are. First off ,
as been pointed out, the starting point for feeding young birds,
is ONE CUP PER 10 BIRDS .
Secondly, I see lots of guys TRAIN their birds to fly around,
and eat their full ration, immediately after landing. In my
opinion, that is a mistake. The birds get the idea, that a few
laps around the yard and lets go eat. I train the kits to trap
with 1/2 Table spoon of millet, then wait 10-20 minutes.... THEN
feed their normal ration. Let them catch their breath and cool
down for 10-20 minutes BEFORE feeding.
It may be worth a try. I have never seen anyone have trouble
getting the Horners to fly. It's probably just a temporary
problem.

Get some Fat and protein in them.. Wheat is more of a carb

What do I mix with the wheat to get to 16%?

Just buy a 16% pigeon mix from your local feed store.

The only thing they have is what I feed my homers. It has wheat,
corn, soy beans and milo. I have no idea what the protien is.
I got the birds about 3 weeks ago and one died. 6 of them took
off never to return the first time I let them out. Started
feeding them a wheat/milo 50/50 mix. Was told to go to straight
wheat as that was the only grain Mr. Horner fed.
Most of them will trap back pretty good but have a few straglers
that sit on the loft or on telephone wires. They are all in by
dark.
I was told you have to have them hungry before they would fly.
If they are supposed to get at least 2 cups, I sure have not
been feeding enough. I have also been told if you over feed
they fly too long or sky out.

Quailtail,
No one will understand what you talking about because they have
not try different family line. I mention this topic before the
same way you going through.......I left the Horner (Jaconnette)
a long time ago.
A hint for you to figure if the bird is strong or week is to
PICK UP THE BIRD TO YOUR WAISTE AND JUST DROP THE BIRD OFF FROM
YOUR HAND.....IF THE BIRD FLAP IT WING BUT LAND ON THE GROUND
ITS A SIGN THATS A WEAK BIRD AND IF THE BIRD FLY RIGHT BACK UP
AND LAND ON SOMETHING THAT IS HEIGHT THEN ITS A STRONG
BIRD.......
When a bird does this to me I normally take it about a block
down from my backyard and toss the bird up in the air......

Lock them down and feed them up.. and quit listening to others
and learn from the birds.. if I fed my youngbirds what I read
here and there they would starve to death Milo is a nothing
seed. It is little more than a filler. a 50/50 wheast milo is
good as a conditioner for old birds for short periods of time.
Like Thom said put those youngsters on a 16 0/0 mix.
