New to this board, sport, and could use some beginner tips

well i am getting ready to start building a loft with my 11
year old ( you know father son thing) then we would like to
start a good family of rollers, ( not sure how to go about
chosen a good roller) well really not sure how to go about this
whole deal so any beginners tips would help thank you.

Hey tjrepoman, WELCOME! What questions are on your mind? Ask a
few at a time and I will try to answer them. BUT I am not the
roller guru, so hopefully many others will join in. In the mean
time use the search function as many subjects can be found
there.

hey Thom thanks for the welcoming, well first of all ive noticed
alot of kit boxes are more covered then opened, is there a
reason for this?? do kits need alot of room? I live in Visalia
CA, ( central california) how would i find a good breeder to buy
some good birds from??? where can i find a feed portioning
program?? and last question it gets about 115 degrees here how
is that going to effect the birds?

tjrepoman, I will try to answer but I am not qualified for some
of them. Kit box style is mostly a geographical concept. Where
you live ventilation and concealment from the B.O.P.'s will be
the first considerations. The one single most important thing
with loft or kit box construction is WATER keep them dry and
avoid a lot of problems! I do not know anyone who sells birds in
your area but I would reccomend Tony's Rubys without hesitation.
The heat will affect them but I think it is all in what they are
used to. If I flew mine in 115 degrees they would struggle but
the same birds bred and raised in that area would do much
better. Feed is an open can of worms! :) You will get 100+
answers to that question. Starting out I would say, feed a 16%
mix while you learn your birds and study about them in general.

I THINK SID LOVE LIVES IN THAT AREA(VISALIA) AND A FEW OTHERS IF
I REMEMBER RIGHT.
MAYBE MOTHERLODE CAN GIVE YOU MORE INFO ON MEMBERS IN THAT AREA.

As for closed kitboxes, it is so you don't invite the hawks for
dinner. Having an aviary is like a big neon sign saying "Here
hawks, free lunch". As for kit boxes, they don't need alot of
room. Most kit boxes are 3x3x3 or 4x3x4 or somewhere in that
dimension. What you need is more perches than birds and you
would be good to go.
You live in a very good area in terms of finding quality
rollers. There are quite a few guys who live about 30-45mins
north of you in Fresno that has decent birds. But then again, if
you live in Visalia, you have Joe Emberton there. Joe Emberton
is one of the country's top breeders and flyers. If I were you
and planned on getting birds soon from someone local, Mr.
Emberton would be the guy I'd go to. BTW, how much you feed and
what you feed the bird...that's the perfect question that can
only be answered by the guy you're purchasing your birds from
but most feed a mix of wheat/milo and sometimes peas.

BOP = Bird of Prey. It applies to hawks falcons and other avian
predators.
