Jay, Line breeding is using either a cock or hen to establish a
family/line that birds produced will all be related to either
the cock or hen.
Cross breeding is when you breed 2 birds together that are of
different breeds example Roller to Homer! Outcrossing is
breeding 2 birds that are of the same breed but are from
different lines/strains and not to be confused with cross
breeding! Hope this helps you.

Jay
Raul stated the difference very well. I think there is NO
SECRET BREEDING from reputable breeders. There is , however,
lots of misinformation and misunderstandings concerning
different families of birds.

Raul hit the nail on the "head"...
And what Cliff said "There is , however, lots of mis information
and mis understandings concerning different families of
birds",is very critical. I think this would be a great topic of
conversation and would clear up many "questions" for many...

windjammer
If you would start the thread, I will be willing to add my
thoughts/opinions. It has become very evident to me, that proper
evaluation of ANY family of birds revolves around two major
issues, 1.) the breeding pairs started with and 2.)the
experience and expertise of the flyer. Some fanciers can select
the best pairs by gut, but can't train worth a hoot. Others know
how to get the maximum performance out of any kit, but can't
breed worth a darn. We sit and listen to the questions from
flyers with birds and they ask us what we think about this
family or that family, when they should be going directly to the
breeder of their birds. WHO else has the most knowledge with
their birds? Then we see a novice flyer, who may screw up any of
the best families, just because of his ability level,
inexperience, or knowledge of Rollers. Somebody has to be doing
well with every family out here or nobody would want them! The
trick is to find out how to handle them through all the
different phases of their development. Short answer... It takes
years to learn how to unlock the magic found in any certain
family of Rollers, IMHO

I agree with you 110% Cliff. The very first place a person
should go to for answers is "the breeder" of the birds that you
purchase. Everybody has their opinions on what is the good way
to handle things... with all "good" intensions but the "Breeder"
knows his birds. It takes time to "learn" your birds. It seems
nowadays that everyone wants a "QUICK" fix. They want all the
answers "yesterday"....lol. Ya gotta put in some time and "pay"
your dues, so to speak...

Jay, no such thing as "secret breeding" unless its a color
project hidden behind the garage. Learn the fundamentals of
breeding animals in general and master the roller pigeon colony
you have. I think your title to start this thread implies there
is a short cut to breeding better rollers. There is not.
Breeding rollers and mastering them is a years-long endeavor of
gaining knowledge of what in the gene pool and how to know what
birds to put together to improve and advance your program. As
Cliff suggests, the ability of the fancier is paramount to
success with any strain of rollers.

breeder, flyer or better yet several, go watch there birds in
the air,.. pick there brain,.. find out how they do things with
there birds, study there set up and how they manage there birds
ect.. if ya like what you SEE and what the breeder is telling
ya.. buy ya a kit of his birds or if he is the right kind of
breeder you probley can pinch some off him... get pedigrees on
the birds or some kind of info... take them home fly um , house,
feed, manage as close to his way as you can... fly them out...
next year or so try breeding you some more... have the breeder
help... keep picken his brain.....it takes time..

This is the right advice and is the advice I'm following. This
is my summer project :). Meet as many flyers as possible and
pick their brains. Take in all the information and then process
it and synthesize the information to create what I believe and
want out of it.

I agree. The only secrets to breeding the right birds is to get
to know your birds and to get as much info from experienced
(pedigreed) breeders.
