Feed To Feed Flyin Rollers

Needing some help on feed to feed rollers besides wheat?What do
some of you feed with wheat.Thanks for any Help.

Alot of flyers feed alot of different things. The most
consistent answer I hear to that is 50/50 wheat milo mix but
that is only for the flyers. Right now, the few birds that I
have are on a 45/45 wheat/milo mix with about 10% of it coming
from a 15% flying w/corn mix.
For breeders, you should feed a higher pigeon protein mix of
around 15-16%.
I have talked with some flyers that fly a straight 12% pigeon
mix the entire year for their kit birds. Again, it depends on
your family of birds and how they react to the amount of feed as
well as certain types of feed. But a nice pigeon mix should be
fine and a 50/50 wheat/milo mix should be fine as well. Just
make sure you have some grit around.
I'm sure other more experienced flyers will chime in.

Ricky, it may be a good time to say its probably as important or
almost as important to say 'how much' to feed as what to feed. i
have fed red wheat and white milo to kitbirds, but never fed
them separately. after reading much about this topic over the
years, it would be a better idea if you're going to feed more
than one type of grain, to feed them separately. this will
insure that each bird is getting his fair share of both grains.
pigeons are not stupid, and when hungry will eat everything they
can but still manage to choose favorite grains even if there are
only two being offered. so, if you want to feed wheat and milo,
know what you can expect from feeding both, and then only
experimentation will tell you how much of each. for starters,
you can certainly feed 50/50 of each. again, dont mix them
together, as it will give each bird a different amount since
they may go for the wheat first, and then when its gone, start
with the milo. hope this is helpful

Every grain will cause the birds to react a little different. A
short time on milo causes my birds to slow down and kit tighter,
and fly longer. Wheat looses them up and can send them way up.
I have tried pellets and they took the shingles of my roof, they
flew so low, and they flew fast. I can not get peas so not sure,
however i feed a mix and I believe that the pigeons take a
longer time to digest peas. This caused them to not trap as
well,, however lots of grit could fix that.
Experiment with your birds, but use the one grain for an
extend amount of time. It ussually takes 7 to 10 days to see
what the feed is actually making the birds change. This can be
faster or slower depnding on grain and pigeon family.

Is white wheat ok?Also what price for 50 Pound Bag of Milo?Has
anyone every used wild bird feed by Pennington? It Has Milo &
Vitamins & Minerals.

if you can get white wheat, it is considered by some to be
better than the hard red wheat for flying birds.

What I feed....
During the Winter months all my birds get plain old pigeon mix
from winners cup with popcorn. I use the hard grains/mix to keep
the birds warm during the winter and it just makes it easier to
feed everything. Breeders and Kit birds get the mix.
During the breeding season....I make my own mix for the
breeders. They get one part wheat, one part milo, one part 28%
Pigeon Pellet...every two cycles of this I add 1 part Sauflower.
Kit birds also switch over to a pellet mix during the flying,
comp and training seasons. Again I make my own mix for the kit
birds. They get 5 parts 50/50 wheat milo to 1.5 parts 28%
pigeon Pellet to 1 part sauflower.
The old kit birds as well as young birds that are WELL INTO
THE ROLL....get the mix on the day they fly...then they get
50/50 wheat milo on the rest days. Usually two rest days with
the rations cut each rest day. The mix they get a full
ration....2 cups for 20 kit birds. If the birds feel light or
start to get light I give them mix on the second day for about
two cycles of flying.
Young birds get mix the whole time until they com into the
roll and they get the rich breeder mix. They NEVER get straight
wheat or milo or the combination until they come into the roll.
They also get just about all they can eat. They also get flown
every day sometimes twice a day.
When the young birds come into the roll they get promoted to a
more active team....coming into the roll is just what I
said....rolling like it should be promoted......they stick out
like a sore thumb. I do not fly LIKE AGES TOGETHER>.....I fly
like performance together. Age is meaningless. If a young bird
can hang with the A team then the young birds stays in the
A-team...and I have had 6 month old birds flying with 2-4 year
old birds and you could never tell the difference...and 9 times
out of 10...the birds that I stock are usually the shining stars
that catapult to the top...meaning some skip the B team all
together or fly in the B team maybe one or two flys.
When the young birds come into the roll......that is when I
add a rest day and fly every other day...and that is when I put
them on the Kit bird mix and start playing with the wheat and
milo......they dont get the two days rest and more wheat and
milo until they are flying like A team or B team birds.
You have to find what works for your birds....when you do a
trial on a feed schedule try it for a minimum of two weeks ...a
month is even better......it takes that amount of time for the
birds to start reacting to a feed schedule change.
I know some fliers that feed mix all the time and they perform
well.....again..you must learn the birds.
The next thing is that I dont understand for one second why
anybody would fly young birds on straight wheat....young birds
are still growing and changing and need all the nutrients you
can feed them so that they grow nice and have great muscle
development. No need to tweak young birds or give them just one
grain...they are still learning....drop the hammer down when
they can handle it. I mean would you send you growing kids to
school with a bag of rice...or would you pack an apple, rice,
chicken and a milk. Why...because your kids are growing and
need the additional nutrients.....well our young birds are the
same way....
SOmetimes I wonder if old birds that fall apart when the hammer
gets dropped because they were not able to develop the muscles
and mentality from an unbalanced diet as young birds. Just my
thoughts.
I know in livestock all my young animals were fed the best
well balanced feed until maturity.
Did not go into to much detail...but I basically use the
pellets like most use peas. I have alot more control of my birds
with the pellet mix for the kit birds.

I wanted to try red wheat but I cant get it here in Georgia.
White wheat is running 16.50 for 50 lbs and milo is 12.00 for 50
lbs. Austrian winter peas are 34.50 for 50lbs, and I use
saflower and black oil sunflower from Walmart during the molt
and when it's cold. ;)
