I have bought decent masks before but they were just
uncomfortable to wear and breath out of , I like a qaulity
disposable .. the problem is once they are shot it takes me a
bit to replace it.. I can see where some stratigic vents would
help wonders due to the dust seems to get shoved onto one side
of the loft .. although if I vent it it may change that .. just
       gotta see.

Hey Scott, The pup is right. I hate wearing a mask but not being
able to breath is not good ether! :) I have been wearing a dry
wall mask "sometimes" but they clog easily and in the long run
would cost more then investing in a decent mask. I'm going to
buy one but wearing it will be a learning curve! :)

       Take care my friend

we need to start a new thread with this health topic, as it
impacts everyone. i myself have just started to have a breathing
problem when spending time in my new loft. for the past 2 ye
ars, i've only had a reach in kitbox. even though i installed
grates and the birds do not contact their droppings, there is
still something that effects me when i spend time in the loft. i
did buy a quality mask, with the two replaceable filters when i
was painting the inside, and now i just use it when i'm going to
spend more than a minute or two inside. ondura roofing allows
fantastic venting, but i will install some low vents to insure
       proper flow all the time.

       hay thom and list,
i was a janitor at a few places in my life until my health going
down hill in last 10 years but any way talking about pigeon
fancier health i got histoplasmosis in my left eye and the eye
doctor wanted to know if i raised birds and i told him yes and
he clam that's where i got the histoplasmosis from i have to
disagree with him on it because the ohio valley disease the ohio
river has to do with histoplasmsis as well and i spent biggest
part of my life fishing out of the ohio river and i done an
article on histoplamosis and it said the ohio river and central
mississippi valley disease and the appalachian mountian disease
has to do with histoplamosis and the eye doctor i should get out
of birds which i for a short time but i got back into the birds
and i went back and i told him i want to die happy so i got back
into the birds and he look at me funny and had them every since
i said to much already ...........................donnie james

       hi
just thought I would pass this along for your reading. I went
thru months of tests and treatments from a bad reaction to my
birds.I was diagnosed with Hypersensitivity pneumonitis. this is
an inflammation of the alveoli within the lungs caused by
hypersensitivity to inhaled organic dust. Pigeon flyers are
exposed to Avian proteins in feathers, droppings and in my case
       pigeon bloom.

I recommend that everyone wear a good quality mask , not a cheap
       dust mask.

Other problems are bird fancier lung, Pigeon breeder lung,
Histoplasmosis, ground-glass opacity. All these can be avoided
       by wearing a mask.

       Jack,
thanx for sharing this info. now that I'm using a good mask
in the loft, i have not had any coughing issues. since i'm a non
smoker, my wife would not give me a break til I did something,
since we knew it had to be from going in the loft. sad, but you
don't see any other responses to this post, as ignoring the fact
we need to protect ourselves will not help. my loft is brand
new, and i just figured it was something else since i had so few
birds inside andfor such a short time. however, the bloom or
dander is noticeable, and i'm grateful that i won't have to get
rid of the birds. for those in southern climates, a wire bottom
loft with plenty of openings above will cut that down for sure.

I'am new on here and to raising Pigeons. But I have raised
Poultry all my life and showed them. Has anybody tried using a
Bath pan with a Tbl. spoon of Corn Oil on top of the Water.
Seem's liked it helped mine. JMO

Hi rabbit! Welcome to the site! :D
That is interesting comment regarding the oil. What does it do?
Seems like it would make for messy feathers! :P
