       Pigeon Fancier Health

Hey Paul, How are you my friend? Ready for the spring fire
       season?

Paul, I have worked a formal job since I was twelve, four
years active in the Marines and twenty six active years as a
firefighter. none of which makes me special and that is my
point. People who live near large cities never seem to
understand that for some there are no clubs, no way to get
hundreds of miles to the next flier's house, this board and
others like it, is all they have. Encouraging them to keep
rollers in this day of "I want it all and I want it now!" is a
hard prospect. At one time Portsmouth was a hot bed of roller
activity. Now the club sits empty and there a three members that
I know of but no monthly meetings. Everyone is just trying to
stay alive, to keep a roof over their heads. If we are not
careful rollers will become a casualty of modern day life.
Competitions can be a wonderful experience and learning
opportunity but they are not the "Golden Road", the only way to
have a good stud of rollers. I have as much respect for a teen
who gives up lunch at school to buy pigeon feed as I do the most
       elite on this great list.
Sure, fly competitions, use them as a learning experience,
just don't make it seem there is no other way.

       Be safe

       Take care my friend
       Thom

       Thom,
I am doing AOK...had some health issues in 10 that were of
concern at the time but now are not. I had a lung cancer
       scare....welcome to firefighting..LOL...death in the
family....and getting tested for all kinds of issues for spiked
liver enzymes....I was exposed to a patient with Hep C and
anyway...you know the deal. The ex was also taking me back to
court over custody of my son......needless to say...that worked
out because Son loves Dad...LOL.....the blessing was my baby
       girl.
Thom.....I think that was the point I was getting at when it
came to comp. It is not the cup of tea for everyone. It is NOT
the path to knowing about rollers and how to fly. It is an entry
fee and a posting that you competed. It think many that are on
top feel they got there because of comp and that is not true.
They got to the top because they have gift with animals and
drive to learn. But you can have that same drive and gift
without competing. A competition is a Gauge to see where you
stand. Are you making the right decisions.....are the birds
getting better and you are sitting in the same position. That
is about it...comp does make you play with the feed and pull a
little more out of them. If comp was the golden ticket to
success then EVERYONE in comp would be a stallion flier....but
we all know that is not true.
It is the individual person that is going to succeed or not.
Comp only pulls the best out of certain people.....some like
it....some do not like the feeling of competing....or having a
       bad day or losing.
In closing....Comp does pull out the best out of some....and
does not out of all. Having good rollers is based on the
individual person and there understanding of animals and love to
go against another in an event. Comp gives drive to these
individuals..Pride keeps them moving forward. You can do the
same if you are the type of personality to strive for the best.
Would I need comp to breed good rollers at the point I am at
now. No...All I needed to know was what I was looking for in a
good roller....and the fine points....and that is all I need.
....comp did not do it. I made fake fly days and changed feed
myself and tried different things.....yes it was to prepare for
comp.....but flying a comp or not....I would still do the same
if I knew that was how to pull out the best out of them.
       So....its a no win situation......and nobody is right......It
is true comp make you work a little harder....but the work
harder part is the individual person.
       rock and ROLL
       Paul

Paul, sounds like it was a long year. I'm glad you came through
alright. If I did not say it before, CONGRATULATIONS!!! I wish
only the best for you and your bride! :)

I think our points are the same. Not everyone wants or needs to
compete. There are as many reasons for or against as there are
birds. The fun for me lies in being able to go out to the loft
after dinner and hold a newbie or one of it's parents. Seeing my
kit in the sun with their wings flashing chokes this ole man up!
That does not mean I do not expect the best I can breed into or
get out of my birds. In five years, I have had three visitors
and I enjoyed the company but I fly for myself. There is no
halfway for me. It does not matter that I alone see what my
birds can do. Each time I open the kit box door, I expect better
then the last time. Sometimes, it happens, often it does not but
there is always the next time. :)

       Be safe
       Take care my friend

       Thom,
always wear a mask in the loft. that is what caused my lung
issues. I now have to wear a mask every time I am in the loft.
If I just run in for one second I am down for the count. I get
       wheezy when I breathe.
I ended up buying the SCOTT half face mask with two screw on
canisters on each side. I also use my old SCOTT SCBA full mask
from work when cleaning the loft..keep the crap out of my
eyes...it uses the same canisters as the half mask.
Just wanted to let you know that this pigeon dust thing is the
real deal. I should have known better being a firefighter..LOL..

Paul, maybe you shouldn't have a walk in loft. Maybe kit box
size breeding pens so you don't have to walk into a confined
space with unhealthy air quality. Just a thought.

Hey Paul, I start with the best intentions, wear my mask for
days, but I would be lying if I said I wore it all of the time.
I need a better mask, one a little more comfortable and maybe I
could get used to wearing it. I have several friends that had to
give their birds up because of the dust. That is not an option
so I better get a new mask!

Will your lungs clear up if you continue to wear a mask or
is the damage permanent? Will it affect you on the job?

       Take care my friend

Hey Scott, The pup is right. I hate wearing a mask but not being
able to breath is not good ether! :) I have been wearing a dry
wall mask "sometimes" but they clog easily and in the long run
would cost more then investing in a decent mask. I'm going to
buy one but wearing it will be a learning curve! :)

       Sound Roller..

To late for that....the mask is aok. Inside the loft with this
mask is 1000 -5000 times cleaner the regular air. Anyway...the
problem is fixed so I am aok.

       Thom,
The doctor said over time the lungs will clean out some and
heal areas etc.....but the damage is pretty much done. She
explained the lungs as being a garbage can and when it fills up,
any little thing will flare you up with wheezing. I am not to
the point of going down for the count I went to the doctor at
the first signs. The doctor said that some issues are of course
from the job...from all the grass fire smoke, overhauling a
structure smoke..22 years ago the shit we wore was heavy...you
know....we would take our air tanks off ...now we keep them on
because they are light weight and comfortable. well kind
of...lol...so I was already behind the 8 ball.
As far as work I am AOK. Lung volume was at 98% for my age,
and my hold time wae 6.2 seconds with the 1-7 scale. I am fine
when I work out. It only flares up if I get close to the
loft...Even letting them out of the kit boxes will start to
flare me up. To be honest I feel better every day. I can tell
the lungs are healing a little.
Yes man for sure get the mask. Remember you get what you pay
for. My Scott is very comfortable I have had it on for an hour
with no issues. dont worry about a vapor filters just get the
particle...highest quality. I used to do like you...when I first
noticed signs.....I would just wear the mas occasionally. Now it
is every time...even when people come over. Order it up...
       rock and ROLL
       Paul
TOny could give you the model of the one I have...he used to
carry them...and I think that Jedds carries the Scott.
