Ruby Breeders 2011

Each year I keep the best young cock and best young hen to add
to my breeder program. This does not mean they are “breeders”
but that they have earned the chance. I keep six breeder cocks
and six breeder hens, all the rest are fosters or holdover birds
for my spring kit. In order to add a young bird, an old bird
must return to the foster or holdover pool. I have maintained a
single line within my Ruby strain but this year I am going to
start a new line with my original Ruby pair. The two lines will
carry the same genetic makeup but through selection and
isolation will not be the same and this will provide an in-cross
if ever needed. I am going to post a few pictures of my Ruby
breeder cocks and hens. Notice how similar they are when
compared in size and structure.

Hey Thom, as you probably know, when I first started with these
birds I had what I called my Ash Red line (903) and Blue line
(994). The Ash Red line tended towards very hot and the Blue
line was much more stable in that they tended to come in to the
roll later than the Ash Reds. This allowed me to combine the 2
lines and breed toward very stable but yet active and fast
spinners. I think this combination has been a successful formula
for me.
I would throw you a few additional thoughts, try to breed in
some contrasts between the lines, for example, if one line is
deep, consider having the other line not so deep.. This way, you
do have something useful to combine when you feel it is time.
Others for consideration or thought provoking:
* Large to medium/small
* Cobby to long-cast
* Deep keel cocks to short keel cocks
* Strong character to overly hot
I think you get the idea. Blood-wise, they will not differ, They
will still be close genetically, but the expressed traits would
be sufficiently altered to give you the ability to add something
you want or even tone down something else without too many
unknowns being added to the mix as is the biggest concern when
"crossing". Glad the Ruby bloodline has been working out for

Oh, and 1 other thought, hang on to some of those larger
cockbirds to put on small/medium size hens. You don't want your
birds getting too small for too long. I always like to try and
keep a few larger cockbirds around for just this reason. ;D

Hi Tony, I have found much the same as you. I will say however
when the blues are on! They seem to have more speed and the best
wing position. I like the chubby deep keeled birds, they have a
broader chest and a harder feel to them. I also like the keel to
tuck up tight on a cock. I try to balance them and still remain
within my line/in-breeding plan. My progress is slow but steady.
Partly because of my self imposed breeding numbers. I'm to darn
picky and hard headed sometimes but I would not be happy any
other way. :)

Tony can you explain what you are talking about when you say the
birds can get to small on ya.jusy asking not trying to be wise
guy.

Hey Jeff, no problem. In the ongoing effort to get ever faster
spinners, there is a tendency to breed the smaller more compact
birds together. Doing this for too long, the birds will lose
strength through lack of size and the additional muscle that
comes with the bigger size, this will lead to weaker - less
robust birds.
There is much that goes into breeding decisions beyond merely
"roll to roll".

Great looking birds Thom, gotta love the winter plumage, they
are feathered out very nicely :D
