hi, the name is elvis lee and new to the forum and also new to
the roller world. i'm limited on space so i decided i will build
2 portable lofts for my son and i, each will need to be able to
hold a team of 11 birds. i was wondering if anyone could post up
some pictures of their portable loft(s) so i can get some ideas
on how to build mines. also, i'm new to the whole portable loft
flying so any advices and suggestions will be greatly
appreciated, thanks!

so i decided to go with a big dog cage/carrier and split in half
for two team of 11 kit birds. each wafer kit box will have 10
perches and hopefully i can have at least 13 birds in each kit
box. bottom will be 1" square wire and i'll build a poop tray
underneath it, getting excited and can't wait to start flying
soon.

Hey SBS, Welcome to the site. I don't know anything about flying
portable but good luck. Keep us posted on your progress along
the way. The one hint I might know would be to make your roof
color very distinctive so the birds will have a better chance of
finding the box from different locations. You might even use a
pattern such as an "X" on the roof.

Good luck, and welcome!
Take care my new friend
Thom

Hi Elvis,
I haven't flown any Birminghams from a portable but have
Orientals.
My portable was made by splitting a large sized dog kennel.I
screwed 1x1's along the top, stapled hardware cloth on the top
then cut it out in the middle for a flip up/down door. I took a
couple of pieces of flooring(it had grooves in it) and got a
peices of plexiglass for a slide up/down door. What they are
taught is after they have flown and are doen eating I butt up a
small animal carrier with the door open and tell them"let's go
home".Some listen some don't but its cool to show off to people
when it works right,LOL. I don't keep
my birds in it all the time. What I did was when they were young
taught them that they only eat in the portable and after getting
a very smart Fantail(what, smart???? oh yeah, she is!!!) to do it
the youngbirds caught on quickly.
If you send me an e-mail at
mwwilson1964@yahoo.com I can send you some
pics.Kind of computer illiterate..........................Mark

thanks for all the advices guys and i just emailed you mark.
this will be very rewarding not just for me but also for my 2yr
old son. i remember when i bought him his first pair of rollers
a few weeks ago, he was super excited and happy. every time i
come home from work, he'll know it's time to feed his pigeons.
i'll post up pictures as soon as i get the wafer kit boxes done,
again, thanks everyone!

I think I read that portable flown birds have to be much
hungrier to properly settle to a home on wheels. Is this true,
anyone?

Oh yeah Tony, hunger is the only way to manage them but not
starving. One thing I have been doing when I was flying them was
fed them basically a wheat/barley mix in the loft but they get a
special mix in the portable.
As for their behavior if too overfed before you fly them they
aren't as responsive to your signals to come down. If they are
overfed the night before and I fly them in the morning, for
example, they will fly til they are tired and won't respond to
the signals I use for them to come down.I use a white fantail
dropper, shake a feedcan, and a dog training whistle and they
still won't come down til they are ready to,not a good
thing. It'll get them in trouble if say you see a hawk or the
park you are flying at fills up with kids and cars for soccor
practice,LOL.
There is a fineline between being so hungry they fly and watch
for a signal and don't perform much and doing what you want and
responding to the signals. All part of the challenge but ALOT of
fun when it all works out.
I enjoy watching them respond and come down just about as much
as their performance.

ok so i decided it was cheaper to just buy a big dog carrier and
turn it into a wafer kit box. so here's what i did so far:
[img width=640
height=480]
HTML http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu6/sbs_z31/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG00046-20110109-2206.jpg[/img]
i used 1"x2" as perches and have 20 perches set up in there.
they're 6" apart and yes i know they're kind of close together
but i wanted to have as many perches as possible so they don't
have to fight over it. next on the list is to make a frame on
the floor for 1" square wire and make a trap door on top, let me
know what you guys think and sorry for the poor picture quality.

Hey Mark, You can buy crate floors on-line fairly cheap. They
are made to just drop in the same way the rest of the crate
works. That way the whole thing would be made out of the same
material as the door. You might have to cut it to fit but that
is an easy thing to do.

Take care my friend
