       How deep is too deep?
By: oldfart Date: October 17, 2010, 6:31 pm

I will start by saying from the get go, past thirty feet and "I"
think they fall apart. Now change my mind! ;D I'm not talking
thrill seeking. I'm talking about good speed, high quality, get
it's little butt back to the kit soonest and do it again! Don't
misunderstand, I like a good individual and I have heard the
       claims, I'm just saying......

       Take care

Tom, 30 foot is the average of my comp kit, I have some 50 and
60 footers, I have even had a 100 foot hen in the past. My birds
hold it together from start to finish and to me they seem to
gain speed torward the end, this is not a claim, come and visit
whenever you would like. The problem I have with the deep birds
is they wear there selfs out and normally land early. In my 08
kit I had a fifty foot red bellneck that could handle it about
twice a minute and could fly the time, he was out of Charlie
Stacks super cock line which are in the "family". This year I
have bred a fifty and sixty footer but they couldnt fly the time
in the heat. To answer your question How deep is too deep? When
       they hit the dirt ! ;D ;D ;D

[/quote]Ty I like the part "how deep is too deep?? Whenn they
hit the dirt" I dont fly comp so the deeper the better. I would
like to in a tear or two but just dont know what I got untill
spring. I like your style Ty. Shawn

Thom, I think 30 feet is a good safe depth and will score well
if you have a whole kit doing it consistantly and together. I
have some deep birds that are fun to watch, but they wear
themselves out and land early and sometimes hit the hard deck :o
. I have watched some really deep kits out here in So. Cal do
really good, but I have seen one the same kits have 8 birds roll
down when they were flying low. I have a few birds that will
roll down if you don't throw them up into the kit.

I had a bird that would roll down in the breeding loft. He was a
       quick cull. Shawn

Hey guys, I have birds that as individual spinners are deeper
then thirty feet but they fade toward the end of the flight,
perform less and are not as tight through the whole flight. My
kits typically fly over an hour and almost everyday in winds
gusting to 25 mph. I have yet to figure out how to shorten
flying times in order to pack in more concentrated performance.
A shortcoming in my management skills. I also get a few that
have an accident coming in, rarely going out but they don't last
very long. In five years, I have raised one true roll down. It
would crash no matter how high it started into the spin but
survive because it was sloppy and hit softly, it is no longer
       with us.
As a practical matter and kit performance I still think
over thirty feet would be harder but I can not say impossible.

       Take care my friends
       Thom

Thom....I have seen many kits of the (ten yard range), ::) and
that is a good depth, but add five to ten more yards. :o Joe :)

Thom, my opinion is there is no numerical definition of too
deep. But your suggestion of 30-40 is pretty normal for most.
They are too deep when they 1) dont maintain quality as they
descend in their roll, 2) dont return promptly to the kit 3)
'wear themselves out' and land early. 4) dont adjust their
rolling depth according to the height they initiate it.
If they could roll 50, 60, 100 feet with quality throughout and
do it over and over without bumping and outflying that would be
terrific. I have seen (but not owned) birds that could do this
(50-60 ft, not 100). Not many, mind you, but they are out there.
I believe it is a function of balancing character and roll
stability/control. Too strong of constitution and you get short
infrquent workers, too weak of character and you end up with
       rolldowns and early landers.

wishiwon2, Very well said! I personally like a deeper bird. Not
a dangerious bird but a bird that is able to control how deep
from where it starts, with class of course.
       Thank you :)

Joe, I'm on your side, just not there yet! :-[ BUTT, I'm
       getting closer! ;D

Ty, I thought on your post for days. I was just going to let it
go but somethings just need to be said. I have followed your
trials and tribulations, through the wind, the fallen trees, the
distruction of your home and loft, even thieves and all the
grief you suffer for color preference.
You never waver, you never change, it's the same song over
and over and I have nothing but respect! I personally have never
watched a bird gain speed at the end of it's roll, especially
not a very deep bird! The one thing I believe, is your integrity
would not allow you to make the claim if you could not back it
up. I would love to stand under your kit or have you stand under
mine, but I do not need to, your word is good enough! :)
Someday, perhaps but until then, take care my friend.
       Thom
