I have an Oriental roller that is almond like you discribed
white with dark flecks. He's a male, but I dont know if it's sex
linked or not. As for the yellows I dont know that either.
someone should be on later to help. Ty is really great with
colors so is Arif. Shawn

I've had pigeons off and on for over 20 years and I'm learning
something new here everyday. Just keep coming back and asking
questions that you may have. I only dumb Question is the one not
asked. Like I said someone will be on today to help out.
Everyone here is super helpful. Even the owner of the site is of
great help with what ever you have a Question about. I talked to
himm today on the phone for over an hour. It was like we had
known each other our whole lifes. Shawn

Your almond could be either sex, sexlinked is a term for
reproduction by color, pattern, or modifier. However I believe
almond is a dominant sexlinked gene. Almond Cocks can reproduce
cocks or hens bred to a non almond hen. Almond hens can only
produce almond cocks when bred to a non almond cock.Yellow and
Rec yellow look almost the same in color but it is a little
different. Ash Red Dilute =yellow while Rec Red Dilute = Rec
yellow.

When a dilute is added to ash red you get yellow. Why is yellow
such a big issue. Is it the dilute?

John,
Yellow is the effect of the dilute gene on a red pigeon. It
washes out the color or pales it out. Dilute on an ash red check
parent would yield "yellow check" young. Dilute on an ash red
bar parent would yield a "cream bar". Dilute on a recessive red
parent would yield "recessive yellow" young, which looks like a
solid yellow color. All are slight variations of the expression
of yellow on those different patterns; self, check, and bar. The
issue with yellow is that some of them, especially the recessive
yellows, seem to be scatter-brained, lacking in intellignce,
hard to train, softer feathered, and more prone to rolling down
(less stable) and less equipped to deliver tighter, faster
spinning. This is, however, a generalization and as
generalizations go, does not always hold true. But since it
represents a bird that is "off-color" (not of the basic three) a
few of the more immature "purist" folks in the hobby, for some
reason, refuse to accept them, make fun of them and the flyers
who value them, call them gay, and refuse to accept the
well-known fact that there are excellent performers in yellow
and have been for many, many years; documented in writing by
William Pensom and many veteran flyers down through the decades,
and as I have personally witnessed in competition kits (not in
large numbers, but they do occurr). Dilute on blue birds yields
what are known as silvers or duns; a sort of washed out blue in
checks or bar patterns. Dilute on black yields khaki, a more
brownish tint. For some reason the dilutes of blue and black
have not attracted the same negative attention from the
doubters, as have the yellows.
Hope this helps!
Cliff
