One of the good points made in the sharing of opinions, here,
is: HOW FAR IS TOO FAR to score a kit? .....No further than the
judge can see the wing positions and the quality of every bird
that meets the judges standard. Now, how far is that? It will
depend on the judge's eye sight, lighting , background (blue sky
vs. overcast), distance to the kit, and weather conditions. So
a general rule..... If you can't see the wings as they fly, you
can't see the wing positions as they perform. And this applies,
to each and every break or bird scored, not just the ones up
close. Remember this if you chose to fly too early in the
morning or too late in the evening. I am waiting for a judge to
whip out his 12X binoculars and keep calling breaks. Yes, I hope
to Hell I am kidding! Cliff

(Scott and the likes...Since you promote yourselve as the
quality expert, please share with us your own definition of "Kit
Quality" in competition and let us compare notes...would you!
This could be educational to all and very interesting. I am
ready for a meaningfull discussion.)

Hey Scott,
I can tell you about one kit that I had the pleasure of
judging that I thought had "Kit Quality" It was back in 2003 or
2004. The guy put up 18 birds I believe. They went up and not
one bird rolled. I was get kinda worried and then all of a
sudden they broke. I mean nice clean break no stalling one
up-lift just like they hit a wall. bam down they came. They
rolled 30' plus smooth and straight as an arrow. excellent
seperation from the kit. It was like a mirrow watching each bird
roll from one to another. And when they stopped they started
heading back to the kit. The kit actually lowered to pick up the
birds. And bam again they rolled same as the first roll. Just
like hitting a wall and again they met as they were heading back
to the kit. I looked at my score keeper and his mouth was just
wide open as he seen what I seen. I mean a kit that was jelled
and working as a team. And not one time did one or two birds
break without 5 or 6 birds breaking with them. This was the best
kit I ever judge when it came to "kit quality" Now he didn't
have enough breaks to win the fly but it was a pleasure to judge
a kit like this. I mean this is what I called the perfect kit to
judge. I have never seen another kit like this in my life. This
kit still is fresh in my mind like the old blurr hen of Joe
Roes.
Cliff
judging should be a little different from judge to judge
but not to the extreme. Like when we show our rabbits some
judges puts more points on the fur quality over body type, go
figure. Some think body type is more important than fur quality.
Cliff as you know the weather plays a factor when it comes
to judging. Like Blue check self on a nice blue sky day. Just
like the rainy hazy days on the white flighted birds.
I love judging because it allows me to get out and meet
others that I chat with or talk to on sites like these. I like
people to be around when I judge because that will give us a
topic to discuss when the flying is done or while being judged.
I know some judges don't like the fancier to be around when they
judge. But I love the idea of them hearing what I call a break
and what I don't.
I will say this I was judging in Oregon a good friend of
mine was judging when I was judging. And we both heard the
fanicer said did you see that full break! I said there were no
full breaks some birds were to short and some were just hovering
in spot while a few were rolling. Now after each fly that day I
asked him what did he score them. And he told me and I would
show him the raw score and we were only off by 1 to 3 points.
Now I have passed out a zero when the flier thought he had at
least scored something.
I will say this each and every fly should be fun and full
of fellowship. Like riding with you and wendell on a fly. Where
we laugh from house to house and enjoy each others company {Oh
with a few text between each subject LOL} But thats what this is
all about enjoying the day and making the most of if. Birds
should come second LOL.
Best of luck everyone may you have many rewards in the
nestboxes and keep the best in the sky!

Brian,
I am with you 100% on the fun and fellowship. The flyers and
their personalities/families, are what makes the NBRC work. The
birds are the glue that holds all our friendships together.

As a new member to this site I have been reading the older
posts. The problems in judging style of the rollers is a problem
all over the world. What I find interesting is that there are no
photos of rollers in action, showing the position of the
wings, tail, head etc. If we place photos each bird style can be
discussed and all of us could learn something and work to
getting a standard that is accepted as a good roll.

Hey Charles, Have you ever tried to take a picture of a bird
rolling. Even with the best quality camera or video it would not
be easy, if even possible. If someone could though it would be
of immense help.
BTW Welcome!
Take care
