       Restrictions on Pigeon Keeping
       By: Chuck K Date: June 15, 2013, 12:08 pm

How many of you live under the threat of losing your birds due
to city ordinances or home owner association rules?
I have had two friends lose their birds to these two issues in
the last couple of years. I also live under the threat from an
HOA, and all it would take is a complaint to have them down on
me. I doubt I would give up the bids. I am close to
retirement and a move anyway so I would just pack my bags and
       hit the road.

       Ahhh the dreaded HOA >:(
I have known fanciers with huge tracts within an HOA
subdivisions having to give up the birds. I also know one fellow
who lives in a ten story condo building who after discussing it
with the HOA, was allowed loft space on top of the building. I
think it really depends on how close neighbors are and the type
of people they happen to be.
I kept birds in the city limits for years then one day find out
a renter near my home had filed complaints. I got out of having
to get rid of my birds because the wording of the ordinance:
"Property owner can not keep poultry or fowl for pleasure or
profit" it went own to name chickens, geese, ducks etc. but
       never mentioned pigeons.
If you have had no complaints and use good loft maintenance you
       should be fine.

The only thing worse than a small or large town elected
official are those folks who run HOA's. There is no convenience
a HOA can provide- from shoveling your walks to an associations
only pool or rec center, to I don't know what else, that would
make living with an additonal layer of self important folks that
feel they need to have a hand in someone elses day to day life
worth it. My Uncle was a terrific man who was one of our town's
councilmen for 12 years who lost a bid for mayor and retired. I
can count on one hand the folks who've held office that I've
known personally that were of the highest quality. One of our
Lake community associations once went before our local town
council to pettition to have the large local grocery store make
Sundays in June, July and August, "such and such lake
association only day" Good luck to you all. If you've
someonhow ended up in the grip of a HOA only God can help you
now and even then you may be beyond even his assistance. Paul

know some folks live like this. I try to not give my thoughts
on some sky sharks or the likes of some of this. My mind just
just keeps on wondering and man i hate some of this. clw

Most people are guilty of not attending the HOA meetings and
being vocal on issues. Now I fully admit my condo the ten years
I lived in Chicago was no place to keep pigeons, but this was a
choice I made. There were a few good things in my HOA dues, I
did not have to shovel snow, garbage pick up, lawn care and
       general exterior up keep.
I bought a new truck in 2005 and a few days later I changed over
to synthetic oil of which I changed in the parking lot. Now the
HOA dues included two marked parking spots where I changed the
oil. It took about twenty minutes and I was careful to dispose
and clean up the area. About a week later I get a fine of
       150.00?? Here was the infraction:
"As a HOA member you are expected to follow all rules, the
following fine has been issued because mechanic work on vehicles
is not allowed. No member is allowed to have the engine
compartment open for more than twenty minutes"
Well needless to say I was HOT and attended the next meeting
where I informed the ELITE! I would not be paying a fine period
for general up keep of my vehicle this day or any day. When
other members heard this they also became vocal about mine and
       other silly fines imposed.
In short the stupidity stopped when home owners realized if you
simply baaaa like a sheep the people would walk on you more.

I am glad i live i the county and not under Hoa or city
restrictions. My neighbors all like to sit around and watch my
birds fly. Hopefully i will never be put in the position of
dealing with restrictions. I enjoy my rollers to much to ever
give them up or someone to tell me how many i can have. Good
luck to all the people who are dealing with restrictions and
       rules.

I own my own house with no restrictions. I've raised pigeons
here since 1991 about 2 years ago Paradise started letting
people have 5 chickens in the city no roosters. my neighbors
like watching my pigeons fly :D

This topic raises the hair on the back of my neck... I would
never live with any kind of restrictions, especially such as
with HOA... A person pays a great deal on $$$ for his "castle".
Plus, raising pigeons is part of some cultures, brought here to
the USA.... 'll be damned if I would let a bunch of "do gooders"
and "bleeding hearts" tell me what I can or what I can not do.
That's why I live in an Amish farming community. Anything good
       here......

AT this year's NBRC Convention in Salt Lake City, Tom Monson,
the NBRC's legal counsel, gave an excellent presentation on
dealing with HOAs that attempt to limit the keeping of pigeons.
I would suggest that anyone that has the problem, contact him...
