Roll downs

Are roll down born or do they evolve over time. I have a
holdover that was a very short (maybe 5ft) bird. The last time
it flew I thought it hit a roof but wasn't sure. Today it fell
approx 50ft and the street stopped him. He was ok and flew back
up. I kept hearing about feed variations so I have been trying
different methods. For the last 2-3 wks for 6 days I feed only
Milo and the 7th day 12%. I seem to be getting a little more
performance out of the birds with the current feed. I tried
50/50 milo/wheet last year but could see no change. I haven't
had any drastic changes in my other birds with this current
feed. ???

Milo has little protien in it. Handle your birds and see if they
feel light. I have a friend that was feeding lots of milo last
year to his young birds and he rolled down over 30 % of them.
This year he is useing less milo and is having less rolldowns.
To answer your question i think a bird can be born to be a
rolldown but you can also cause them by the amount of feed you
give them and what you feed them. Did you notice how long they
are flying now compared too what you were feeding before?

Jon, Milo and wheat have very little difference in protein %
and I honestly dont think feeding milo or wheat, is in this
case the cause to this bird rolling down! IMHO rolldowns is a
subject that you will get a million and one opinions on what is
the cause!
Funny thing is that you can breed from a roll down and get a
stable bird, breed from a stable bird and get
rolldowns.......... .... Maybe the "pros" on here can give you
the answer to what you are looking for..... If I were you in
the mean time I would suspect worms to be the cause LOL!

hay lestests,
i tried wheat and milo a few years ago they had more spin to
them on mix feed so when every i get kit of young birds going
again i'm going to try this again......................donnie

I have experienced three different kinds of roll down.
First one is the young bird that is rolling singles or double
roll and all of a sudden they are rolling deeper and faster.
They don't have any control of this change in their rolling and
roll down. Most of mine have learned to control the deeper
faster rolling in time and stop rolling down.
Second ones are birds that have been lock down for three or more
days and come out of the kit box hot. Hot as in they are so
excited to be let out of the kit box they start rolling to soon.
Usually my birds are not effected by this and fly right away
because they really did not get high enough in the air to hurt
themselves bad.
Third one is a mature bird that just keeps getting deeper and
deeper and deeper till the hit the ground. They slowly develop
into a roll down. My birds that have done this usually are the
ones that never snap out of this behavior. They will always be
a roll down and is a true roll down to me.
I'm sure other lofts have experienced many other things. This is
what has happened to me and only my experiences.
