Hey All.
Had a few old birds out with my young friday. My best
cock bird clipped a house roof as he was rolling, he went down
into the yard of the house, After few mins I decided to get
round and see if he was Okay, as I went my wife phoned to say he
came back, but was pounced on by a cat. Aparently he crash
landed and cat came out from under the loft and pinned him down.
I was brief as the cat was chased of and the bird went in.
There's no visible marks and only a few tiny specks of blood.
He's still alive two days later, but doesn't have any get up and
go in him. I'm assuming he's over the worst and is just very
sore. So was looking for any pointers on health care. I did give
him half an amoxycillin tablet Friday and Saturday. This is a
new one on me, as I fly to traps and never allow my birds to
land on the ground. It's also been over 29yrs since I've had to
deal with any flying injuries, so little rusty.

Hi nephilim, giving the bird some antibiotic was a wise
decision, as the bird may have been bitten ! Cats carry deadly
bacteria in their mouths and teeth that can cause grave illness!
Ask anyone who has been bitten by a cat and not treating the
wound!

nephilim, if it happened on Friday I think he'll be okay usually
what you have to worry about injuries like that is shock. I had
a hen get hit by a bob and lost a leg over two years ago I
still have her to this day. Pigeons are pretty tough.

Cheers for the replies guys. I know the perils of cat bites, my
father helped me catch and rehome my cats from an old house when
the landlord decided that after 5yrs I couldn't have cats! One
bit him and he spent two days in hospital and several shots!
Unfortunatley he didn't make it (the bird, not my dad). I guess
there was some internal injuries that I couldn't feel. I had put
him in a spare nest box with food and water, a couple of hours
before I found him dead I'd put his hen in with him and as I
left them she was preening him. I had made the decision, that
this time I wouldn't have any prisioner birds, all my birds
would fly out. So although he should have been a stock bird I
took the choice that he would fly. He's from the Ian Birkett
strain, these birds are slow to mature and at 2yrs he was just
getting to his prime with some rolls of up to 5 seconds and
anything from 20feet. I always knew he would never reach old
age. He had been chased countless times by sparrowhawk and had
bumped into trees and roof a few times. Everytime he came into
land he would land on the house before dropping onto the
loft/coop, because when he tried to copy the others and land on
the loft/coop he would spin from the hovvering. He was such a
pleasure to watch, if only I had another 19 like him. Oh well
back to the breeding drawing board.
