i would like some suggestions on how to lower the ammonia levels
in my waters ...i use tap water

I'd contact your City Water Dept.... :o you shouldn't have
any Ammonia levels in your drinking water... ::)

What you are probably smelling is chlorine. I have lived in
cities that got their water from lakes, and even the dishes
smelled like someone had used bleach in them. The water itself
was disgusting to drink. There are products to take out the
chlorine. They use them to take chlorine out of aquarium water
to keep from killing the fish, but it is not necessary to take
chlorine out of the birds water. In fact a lot of people add a
cap full of Clorox bleach to the water as a disease
preventative.

Hi Craig
you can just put the water in a jug a day or two before you
give it to the birds and the chlorine will evaporate if you
leave the lid off the jug. I have to do this were i live
because the chlorine levels are high in the tap water.

I have been adding one teaspoon of chlorox to a gallon of water
for a couple of years now with no ill effects

There's a train of thought, the stuff that's in tap water may
inhibit any medication from being properly absorbed by the
pigeons. There's a few companies that have started to supply
de-chlorinetors that are added to the water. I myself use RO
water for my birds, mainly because I have a RO filter unit for
my 650ltr marine reef fishtank. But as stated leaving your water
to stand for a day will do, or purchase a small aquarium pump to
airate the water and remobe the cholrine and chromines. A simple
RO unit for a few dollars from a good aquatic shop or that well
known auction site would be better as it strips everything and
produces pure water.
