Starting Birds From Lock Down

How does everybody get their birds started after being locked
down during the hawk season? How do you change their feed or do
you?

Funny this topic just came up. About a week before I want to
start flying, I cut their feed back to my fly mix. For 5 days I
just feed 1/2 ration for 7 birds, wild finch seed and 1/8 cup
corn...(just because it is still cold at night). 6th day I open
the kit box door and out they go. The cocks were all over the
skies, as if they never flew before. The hens on the other hand
were little better, 4 out of the 6 kitted right off the bat.
The other 2 were out birds for about 10 minutes but, then
decided to hook up with the others. Both flew for about 15
minutes or so. I plan on flying them everyday until they kit
well together. Then fly them every other day.. if possible.

I guess mine are too fat. All winter I gave them all they would
eat. A good mix with popcorn. I have since over the past week
cut this mix with wheat and milo. I had them out last weekend
and for the most part they flew a little and sat a lot. Like to
have never got them back in the loft.
That told me I was over feeding so I started cutting back on the
feed mix going to 50/50 wheat and milo. Cut the portions back a
little at a time. Had hoped to get them back out this week
ending but was too windy and today it is 35 with rain and sleet
mixed.

Well today after church I let out the holdover cock birds.
Surprisingly enough they
kitted quite well. Flew for about 15 minutes. 1 outstanding
cock was really on. Out went the hens, kitted well and flew for
almost 15 minutes. Also 1 surprising
good hen. After all the birds trapped I pulled the outstanding
cock and the 1 surprising hen and put them up in a breeding pen.
That's a total of 5 pr of Ruby's
in the breeding loft.

Today I let out 4 youngsters they were all over the sky but
that's normal this was only there second time out. And then a
sky shark showed up. I thought I lost one I through out some
junk birds and it came back. I'm going to start cutting back on
food they are too fat. I wish I could train my birds every day
the hawks are definitely still around but they seem not as
interested as they are in winter. I'll try again this weekend.

Was able to get mine out yesterday afternoon. One team flew and
kitted well. The other, not so good. Only the second time they
have been out so I did not expect much. They are still too fat
but the weather will keep them in for a while. The forcast for
next 8 days is just above freezing with snow.
