       George Mason Rollers

Hello guys i currently have 4 rollers (unknown strain) in a 4ft
moddified rabbit hutch. I will be building a larger kitbox very
soon and i want to buy some well known proven/pedigree rollers.
I am in the Uk and Mason Strain rollers pop up regularly for
       sale on bird trader.
Can someone please tell me a little about these birds, how do
they differ from normal rollers in the way they fly an also in
       how they look?
Also if anyone knows how to contact George Mason then would you
please let me know as i rather buy direct of him if this strain
is for me, i searched online but couldn't find a contact for
       him.
If anyoneone knows any other breeders who breed popular strains
here in England then please do share.
       Thank you

The difference between the Mason strain and "normal" rollers is
that normal rollers roll backwards, Mason rollers roll forwards
and do the Waltz in mid air ;D As far as how they look, they
look like "normal" rollers, 2 eyes, 2 legs, 2 wings etc :o
Acquiring birds just because of well known proven/pedigree, or
is the flavor of the month is like purchasing a race horse with
a bad limp! Well known pedigrees don't fly and pedigreed race
horses with a bad limp usually end up as glue!! I just purchased
birds from a well known competitor, no pedigrees, are the birds
good? I don't know I've never flown them! The breeder of these
birds has, and flown very well with his strain. I may never get
to fly these birds as good as he does!! Purchasing "well
known" strains from a well known breeder/competitor is a good
start however , the rest of your future with these birds is up
       to you!

Driver, If you don't belong to the NBRC roller club, I
suggest you do or a club similar in the UK. As far as I'm
concerned your doing it the right way. Find some one who has
done well and George has and visit him a number of times to see
his birds fly. This does two things, birds don't always do their
best when your there, but the more you see them the better
chance you have of knowing what they are capable of, second it
shows George or whoever that your really interested. The NBRC
has a bullitin that comes out once a year with the members
addresses and phone#'s and sometimes emails. There are a lot of
good roller men in the UK, so don't fixate on just one person.
Good luck and welcome to a great hobby. Mike

Mr. Superior Spinners, could you shine some light on the Don
       Ouelette thread ;) ?
Driver, there are many great flyers in the UK. I would suggest
you join the AERC, All England Roller Club there. If you are
serious and show you are serious, many of those guys would be
willing to help you out. As far as George Mason goes, he does
not like his contacts being given out so I will not give out his
information but you may contact the AERC and give them your info
and George Mason can contact you back.
As far as some of the other flyers, guys like John Wanless,
       Deano Forster and Les Bezance.
Of course there are also some very successful Irish flyers like
Austin Fox and Kevin McKinney too.
       Good luck

Yes, George does not like his info being out there :).
Mike, do you have any info on the background of Don's birds?
I've heard he used some Plona's but again, not sure if that is
       even remotely true.

It's not the birds you buy from any "champion" breeder/flyer.
It's their management you want. The named flyer has spent many
years blending his birds, to create a strain. But don't believe
all you read on those feather merchant website. everyone and his
brother has a well known strain when they're for sale. You could
buy from the man himself, but without a management regime you
might as well go catch some ferals in the city. All rollers will
perform, it's in their blood, so consider what you want to do
with them? I've seen people who have spent a small fortune on
rollers, only to get the management wrong and they end up flying
to fast and flat (no perfomance). As stated get involved with
some of the forums here in England. Such as all england roller
club or fancy pigeons r us, both sites will help you, just ask
for help and guidence. All I'll say is the wing is a better
judge than the perch. Any birds you think of buying , wait till
you've seen at least one kit fly, before reaching for your
wallet. You see on those feather sites "hughes" tipplers for
sale. Gordon's been dead nearly 20yrs and kept racing pigeons in
the early 1990's. Just remember the saying let the buyer be
aware. HTH till next time good luck.

Tou, If you go back far enough there are Plona's in
everyone's birds or even further back Richard's birds from
England.. Don has told me , but I don't want to get it wrong,
when people start throwing out band #'s , I get dizzy...lol. Don
is like George, he keeps to himself and I have to respect
that... sorry!! Best thing to do is talk to the man who you got
the birds from. Remember guys... Pensom, Plona, and Smith have
been dead for 40 to 50 years , in my opinion they have nothing
to do with the birds nowdays. They would have bred them much
different than you or I. When people say they have Pensoms or
plona's or Smith's , I always think it sounds so stupid. These
are Ouelette's, Higgin's and so on ... give them credit.....
       JMHO...

You are most definitely right Mike. That's what I put down in my
       reply to the Ouelette birds:
He's had them long enough to be his own family
I know my mentor said "Once you start pairing up the birds,
start flying, culling, and selecting your own pairs, they are no
longer my birds, they are your birds."
Nephilim is also right in that you might be able to buy a man's
birds but you can't buy that man's managerial skills.
Hope you are well Mike, have not seen you in a while buddy. Stay
warm up there...and get back in birds. You know you're missing
out and your falcons are getting a bit thin :)

Hi nephilim I agree with you 120%! That is what I was trying to
say in my 1st post. To often many think that purchasing birds
from top flyers is all you need to do to be successful.
