My rollers flew away today

Hello guys i have had my 4 roller pigeons for around a month
now. They had around a week in the settling cage where they
spent most of their time during the day and they were also trap
trained.
Today i had them all in the settling cage but moved the cage
around 12 feet from their kitbox. I started shaking the feed can
and opening the door to the settling cage. They all just took
off and flew in large circles around my house and then just flew
in the opposite direction.
They were hungry as i did not feed them yesterday. I am just
very confused as i dont know what i did wrong. This is the first
time i've kept pigeons.
I am looking to buy some more rollers but need to know what to
do different this time.
Any advice will be appreciated. Thank you.

hi mate sory to hear about your loss its realy heart brakeing
when that happens.were they young birds or old birds.if they are
old birds its lucky to get them broke in,you need young birds
straight from the nest so they cant fly far, that way you can put
them out on the loft for about 20 mins a day, then that way they
get to know the seroundings and they soom know where they
live,hope this is a help.

The age of the birds was around 4 months. Are they still classed
as young birds at that age?
Also what is the best age to buy young rollers at? As im looking
for some more now
Thanks

they were still young birds but to late, you need to get them as
they are weaned from the nest, that way you can put them out on
the loft before they can fly to far.

I have bought 3 more pigeons today all 12 weeks old and have
never flown before. This time i will soap their wings or tie
them when letting them out for the first time after i think they
have settled and trap trained well.
How long do you think the process should take from getting my
rollers today to releasing them for the first time? This is what
i was thinking:
0-7 days - train them to the feed call
7-21 days - attach settling cage and train them to trap train.
21-28 days - soap their wings and let them out for the first
time
Then take things from there. What do you think?
Thanks.

that sounds good but dont rush them the longer you soap the
wings the better.i once broke some racers in. i put elasticbands
round the wings for about a month and that worked,

I usually keep the birds for about 1 month. Put them into a
separate cage on top of your loft so they can see from above.
I'll not feed them for two days prior. Tape their flight
feathers and turn them loose when it's almost dark. Just open
the loft door and let them come out on their own. Do not scare
or throw them out or up. They don't want to go anywhere because
it's getting dark. i don't think you have to treat them like
homers because they don't have that desire to fly great
distances. This has worked for me but it is not 100%. You might
try only turning one bird loose at a time.

As I remember, YOU were told in an earlier thread, to leave the
birds in the settling cage for 10-14 days..... You said they
were in for 7... It may sound trivial.... but, those EXTRA days
can be crushal...

Sorry about your birds.I'll share how I do mine. I made a
settling cage 16"X24" 10" high make demensions to fit your
need, I have a pull up door on the top side that snaps to close
to put birds in cage. I take Ybs put them in there, let them
set on top of kit boxes a couple hrs a day, 7 or so days, Then
I have landing board attached on door of kit box, the door has a
4" pvc trap. the settling cage sets on landing board, settling
cage has a removble overhead pull up door. I have a grove
that is cut into a piece of 2x2 on each left and right side
that allows the door 6"x10" to slide up and out of the groves
that act as a track to keep the door in track. I slide the
settling cage up to pvc trap, remove the pull up door and they
can trap. Usually 1st or 2nd time I may have to push them
through the trap, this being done using a 6"x10" door that is
oposite of the the trap door on the other side. It is hinged
at top and can be pushed inward only and a homemade latch that
keeps it secure when not in use. Some times I take ybs that are
trap trained, and after a fly with older birds, I'll slide the
settling cage over to the kit box where the older birds have
trapped and let the ybs trap behind the older bird kit in
same kit box, next day I will take the ybs out by hand one at
the time, set each one on top of the kit box roof, I release
the old kit birds, the ybs see old birds fly, and they will trap
usually after and behind the old kit birds. one day when they
get tired of watching the old birds one or two may take to
the air. If old kit wants to come down early because of the ybs,
then I will go do them seperate in their own private kb. I set
settling cage with 12 ybs on the ground 2 weeks ago, and rode
off on my 4 wheller to a friends hse, when I came back a cooper
hawk was attacking the birds in the settling cage. He had, put
his talons on one birds lower back and brought blood out of of
anothers craw. They are ok now, I knew better than to leave
them unattended ... Can't fix stupid so I've herd?---------
GOOD LUCK with your new birds. chesley
