In the Eye of the beholder...

So eye sign talk is out there, and no matter how you feel about
it, (think its a bunch of bull hockey or not) its kinda fun to
talk about it. Its just another cool thing to talk about when
discussing pigeons right? Or is it the real deal? I had a real
old time game cock guy tell me eye sign was no joke, with
generations proving it, generations of people mind you not
chickens. Then again I also had a master flyer tell me any one
selling eye sign is selling tickets to the dog and pony show. So
what do you guys think does mysticism belong in the modern day
roller fancy, or should I throw eye sign talk in the old
circular file? To tell the truth I like the different eyes
pigeons can have. Do I think if a pigeon has a certain eye it
will be good-great, nope. Have I seen a lot of good-great
pigeons with graveled, haloed, wild, crazy looking, all of the
above eyes in the air and stock pen yes I have. So its at least
fun to talk about it, what do you guys think? Attached a pic of
a proven six year old hen, proven from sky and stock, she throws
some spin. What do you think of her eye?

The only thing I look for in the eyes is to make sure a bird has
2 of them! ;D

Looks like the margins of her iris is a bit irregular. Shes an
older hen, so that could most likely be an aging sign. I would
believe eye sign on the grounds of anatomic structure and
function of the eye.
If a person who swears by eye sign could explain what the
paramount features are of the eye that links it to a good bird,
then I would be more interested. But I do not think they could
tell you the objective features that they are looking at and
correlating to a "great" bird. I know this is more in homing
pigeons. But rollers too? I would say to watch em fly and thats
all the eye sign you need.

One thing I have learned since I have been raising roller is:
Everyone has their own ideas of how to do things. And waht
works for one, doesn't necesarily work for another.. And "No" I
don't put any thought into what a rollers eyes look like. But,
just like Raul stated, I do look for a bird to have 2
eyes....lol. Oh the other hand when I raced pigeons, YOU can
bet your your azzzz... I did pay attention to what the birds eye
looked like. This is just my take....

Interesting stuff here folks... Yes two eyes that's what we
usually want them to start off with. Kev you have some logic in
there for sure. Windjammer that seems wild that you were
interested with homers but not rollers. You would figure if the
eye could show merit in a racing bird that same merit could be
found in a roller (strong flying, homing or something). But
maybe since the roll is so elusive we look over all other good
tendencies a roller may have in favor of the roll. Too bad the
roll didn't show in the eye for sure. Oh yeah and you talk to
100 different rollers guys on how to do something with the birds
and you will get 100 different opinions. Anybody else have any
eye pics? How bout hot vs. strong I heard one was orange eye and
one was pearl eye, what have you all heard or seen?

What are the eye signs in rollers indicative of?

I tend to agree with Kevin M. Nobody has yet shown me any
reliable correlations between eyesign and performance in
rollers. There may be some credibility to it, but it is
undefined and unproven. The one exception seems to be pupil
constriction or reflex. Birds with an active flex in their
pupils tend to be more stable than those that have a very slow
reflew and an inactive pupil dialation. I like a bird that has
an eye/pupil that is actively focusing in and out like a camera
lens. I believe birds which do that are often a bit more active
in their performances. But it is not someting I use in selecting
birds, just something I notice as an aside.

HTML http://www.rollerpigeon.com/index.php?action=profile;u=362....you<br
/>said it all when you mentuioned the fact aboout asking 100
guys
the same question. My reasoning for not looking at a rollers
eye for any significate value was .....When I first got
introduced to rollers many of the guys that I was learning from
all said "Roller eyes don't show any signs of thier
performance." So I left it at that.... I have not heard in any
of the forums that rollers eyes carry any merit to their
performance.....Just my opinion

Paul,
I agree with you 100%.
There is no statistical data whatsoever, to suggest that one eye
type is more indicative of performance in these rollers than any
other. AND...even if there were data available, it would purely
be based upon opinion...which is in an of ittself a crap shoot
or a guess. This is due to the fact that what may look a
certain way to me or you, could get a totally different
perception from 100 different people.
It's more of a way to kick the can down the road and attempt to
establish a prowess of judgement based on someones imagination.
Just something to talk about...with no statistical proof....just
heresay.
