Roller pigeon housing

Hello guys i currently have 4 birmingham roller pigeons in a
large 4ft rabbit hutch. I am thinking of building a permanent
housing for around 10 or 12 rollers in total and just need some
advice.
Is it true you can keep rollers in a kit box all year round if
you are flying them on a regular basis? I was thinking of
building a kitbox around 8 feet long x 4 feet high x 3 feet wide
with a seperater in the middle to make two sections. Will this
be fine or would i need to build a larger loft instead?
I was told rollers dont need as much room as other types of
pigeons but i am not sure if this is true?
Thank you

Sounds like your on the right track. My kit boxes are 4'x4'x4'
with hard wire bottoms.

Yes you can keep rollers in a kit box all year. The size you
are talking about is fine. I keep 20 rollers in 4' x 4' x 4'
section. Venting is real important. Even if you have a screened
floor you still need other vents for proper venting. The small
kit box for rollers are fine for the kit birds. They don't need
much room. Breeding you would need more room. In a 4' x 4' x 4'
breeding pen i would only put 2 pairs myself. Hope this helps
Good luck with your rollers.

Thank you mate i will start building one in a few weeks time, i
have read that the kit box needs to be dark as this helps
rollers kit better, is there any truth in this? I was thinking
of adding two large windows to the front to let light in and for
me too see the birds.
Thank you.

I have a small glass door in my kit box but its pointed away
from the sun so they are not getting direct sunlight. It does
help my rollers kit better by not giving the direct sunlight but
that's me. Not saying that's the only way or it works for anyone
else. So i would say yes on darker helps kit better. Between
that and small kit box it makes them want to fly. Also they work
as a team better. It works for me. Good luck!

I have found that keeping the kit birds in a darkened loft makes
absolutely no difference at all to the way they kit or spin. I
have tried both ways over the years and like them to have the
light as it is more natural for them. One of my four fly pens is
only six feet long by four feet high and three feet deep and is
divided in the middle to make two pens. They get plenty of
sunlight through the plexi-glass windows in each door and there
is lots of ventilation without drafts and each section holds
sixteen birds. ( any deeper than three feet would make it harder
to reach in and catch them.) This works very well for me but of
course everyone has their own preference.
