Thanks, Thom! That theory is what I finally decided must have
happened as well. I installed one of the calcium thingies you
wore inside the cage but it has not been touched, Judy hoping
the one egg that is still carefully being attended to hatches.
Much Appreciated,
LindaLinda

thank you SLV,
I will do as you suggested - research "loft building" .... I
suspect that is necessary once I move the birds to the outside
aviary, but will make sure it does not include the "indoor" cage
to be certain! Yes, I too, love my new, gorgeous friends! I
want more!!
One more question that greatly concerns me.....I feed many
species of birds from my outside feeders year round. I have a
pesky Falcon that frequently appears but rarely is successful
catching the birds since I have tons of foliage protection that
they fly into to hide. Can you tell me if when I get the
opportunity to allow my Rollers to fly, is there a greater risk
from the Falcon, as well as many Bald Eagles that fly overhead?
I am in a very rural area with Various wildlife, including elk
that graze in the fields, cougar, bears, raccoons, etc.
thanks again....I will try not to be too much of a pest...
Linda

AMAZING NEWS!! :o Yesterday, I noticed the
Roller's kissing and pecking at each other. I read that is a
sign of their "mating" rituals! Well, Victoria layed another
egg just about an hour ago...I now have two again.. I am
elated...Just hope they hatch! ;D
Thanks to everyone who helped me try to
figure out this egg disappearance mystery!

Hi Linda Ask anything you like and someone on this site will
always be happy to help you out. Theirs a lot of information on
this site. If you us the search feature you can usually find any
info you need. As far as the Falcons they are the bird of prey
that i have the most problems with. Seams like the act of
rolling really attracts the Birds of Prey. Kind of like throwing
a lure to a fish. For me in the summer i have to fly when the
sun first comes up to avoid the BOP. In the winter i can fly
anytime of day. I'm not saying that will work for anyone or any
area but it does work for me. Also your rollers will get better
at avoiding them the more they are forced to get away from them.
The rollers will get used to flying higher, heading for the
trees or heading back to the loft to get away. Seams like i am
breeding rollers that have the smarts to not get caught by the
BOP but it was not always like that. I have lost a few birds.
Best advice i can give you is don't let the Birds of pray see
your birds at your loft out in the open all the time. They will
make it part of their hunting grounds. If they can see your
birds on a daily basis they will be watching and waiting when
you release them. If you do start having attacks don't fly your
birds for a week or so and usually the birds of pray will move
on. Their are lot of rumors on how to get ride of Hawks or avoid
being attacked. Lots of people seam to have ideas on how to stop
attacks. I got all caught up in that when i first started in
rollers. None seam to work because the BOP get used to what ever
you try. It is illegal to shoot, trap, net or harm a BOP in any
way. Big fines and Jail time. Hope this helps!

If your talking about Parlor rollers....ya gotta member "these"
types of rollers DO NOT FLY... Parlor rollers just roll across
the ground... They are EASY pick'ens for BOP..... even when your
right their with them out on the ground, I have watched a BOP
swoop down and snatch one as it rolled across the yard..... Just
my observation and thoughts.. Anyway just enjoy them how ever
you can...

On the post of disappeared eggs, my bet is on a snake. My friend
had two week old youngsters disappear this past summer and I
said a snake got them. My friend said that he hasn't seen any
snakes, so I drove down to his house and we found a large rat
snake in the ceiling above the nest box. I have garden snakes
come into my barn ( I have (4) 6ft x 12ft pens and (2) 12ftx12ft
pens and if a bird nest on the ground a garden snake will get
the eggs almost every time. I can't fly my rollers anymore due
to BOP's. They catch my homers ever now and then, mostly when
they are about to land, with rollers they are big enough to
snatch them out of the air.
Good luck, and Happy Holidays to everyone.
