Newly Hatched egg disappeared

Roller Pigeons eating newly hatched
eggs?
I am new here so please forgive me if I am
not posting in the right place. Asked my question in the "Chat
room" but not sure if that was the right place.
I was given a mating pair of Roller Pigeons
5 weeks ago. I love them!!! Two eggs were layed in the nest I
built after researching online what the pigeons prefer to nest
in, however, I noticed this morning one of the eggs has
disappeared. Can you tell me if one of the birds ate the egg?
Is this normal? Totally baffled.
I want to learn more about these beautiful
creatures before buying more to add to the only two in my
collection.
Thank you!

Welcome to the site Linda Your pigeons did not eat your egg! Its
not normal for birds to eat their eggs. I have had rollers knock
them out of the nest and break them. If you search the whole
loft and cant find sign of any broken egg or shell parts you
have something getting in your loft. Their are many different
kinds of animals our reptiles that will eat bird eggs. Make sure
nothing can get into your loft and your problem should be
solved. Good luck and hope this helps.

Hi Linda
That's strange. You have a mystery on your hands. Do any other
people have access to your office when your not around? My kids
have removed eggs from my rollers nest before. I did not find
out till later that the missing eggs were because my kids
removed them.

Well, it is a mystery, Slv, because I am the only one that lives
here - very strange, however, I did notice the male sort of
pecking at the first egg that was layed, prior to the second
layed, egg. Is that normal? The pair is still taking turns to
lay on the one egg - so far! I hope that egg will hatch since I
am amazed at these lovely new friends. In the spring I will
turn one of my 10X20' dog kennels that have metal roofs covering
half the kennel surrounded by heavy duty metal fencing used for
cattle enclosures and turn the kennel into a pigeon aviary.
It,s too cold here in the Pacific Northwest (I live 25 miles
north of Mt. Rainier so get's very cold with countless
windstorms that channel through the Cascade foothills).
thanks for all your help....I look forward to chatting with many
of you here and learning more through your commentary!

Welcome, It is possible the egg did get broken, If this happened
depending on your nesting material the contents of the egg would
have dried and dissappeared. Sometimes the hen will eat the
shell for the calcium in it. Like everyone else this is just a
guess. Good luck and enjoy your birds.
Take care
Thom

Hi Linda I have seen my rollers move the first egg around a
little and it looked like they were pecking at it but never to
the point they did any damage. Sounds like you caught the
roller bug. Me to i love my birds and enjoy them every day. The
best part of my day is flying my birds. Research info on
building a loft venting is real important. You also need to keep
them from wind chill when its cold. I understand you about the
cold weather, I live in one of the coldest parts of Colorado.
You are welcome for the help. This site has some of the best
roller people around and they are willing to share their
knowledge. Good Luck with your Rollers!
