tall and have heads that swivel when the wind blow. at each
corner of my 18'x21' loft. It kept the hawks from attacking the
birds on the roof. The attacks come while the birds are in the
air. But, like Cliff stated once they get use to the
deterients, they go back to the attacks.... Thank GOD I have
resident CROWS they do a get job of chasing the BOP out of my
fly space

Paul.... Happy for you on the crows sticking around, That's a
natural deterrent.

Rolldown,
If you depend on crows to deter hawk attacks you can plan to
lose a lot of pigeons. Crows are good sentries and will let you
know when there is a hawk around...especially redtails. But
crows come and go and they are extremely undependable. You will
get hit no matter how many crows seem to come and go. I feed the
crows too...and blue jays. We just have to use all available
means......

slvrollers, I'll try the mirrors, I think those will work on the
roof of my shed. I've been hanging cd's around too. Those seem
to help some.
Tony, I don't have any open flights or lofts, I do have windows
on my kitboxes but any hawk would have to land right on the
kitbox to see any birds and they're not that brave. I haven't
had consistent attacks by the hawks, They just come around once
in awhile and try to grab a bird.
windjammerloft, I feed the crows that live around our place so I
usually see crows through out the day and they do a great job of
keeping the hawks moving. Sometimes I'll see up to fifty crows
in the pasture at one time.
thanks for all your replys, they've been a great help! Joe

Joe.... I am not saying that the Crows are the holy grail by any
means but, from my experience my resident Crows are doing a
great job for me. I have only been hit twice this year so far,
they were 2 of my white homers youngsters. The BOP are often
"heard" at a far but, as long as the Crows are present I don't
worry about any air attacks. I must just be "lucky" ....

Hey all. The corvins or crow rook jackdaw and magpie are great
detterants so are gulls, they will mob raptors and move them on
while trying to steal their ill gotten gains from there talons!
I used corvins last year and this and as far as I'm aware lost
none to them, only lost 4 young birds of the loft all year!!!
The Corvins are very smart and you can train them to food just
as you do with your rollers, So you feed them around the fly
time and you'll have your own bouncers of the sky. I put out
uneaten corn and fat balls along with the odd day old chick. (I
keep snakes also) The large plastic Eagle Owls from a well known
auction site are also great at keeping the raptor at bay, but
you have to keep moving them around your location, or the raptor
will catch on that it's not real and start attacking your birds
again. I've put posts up before on this subject, and I'm sure
they can be found in archives on here. Good luck with whatever
means you use. (DELETED BY MODERATOR)
Keep them flying

Neph, I appreciate your desire to help out a fellow roller
fancier but with your last bit of advice you are basically
encouraging people to break the Migratory Bird Treaty Act which
for some roller guys did amount to jail time and very expensive
fines as recently as 4 to 5 years ago. You need to really sit
down with yourself and rethink your strategy for dealing with
BOP and what you advise others to do.
Comments such as yours are used by animal rights groups as proof
and justification that roller fanciers are evil people and
justification for Fish & Game to come down on roller fanciers. I
recommend you google "Operation High Roller" and educate
yourself ASAP! ::)
To All: Do Us All A Favor - Do NOT harm any BOP at all for any
reason at anytime. ;D

Hey Tony.
Very sorry for the last part of my post. I
didn't realise it might have caused concern for some, feel free
to delete if it might cause any problems to you or the forum. It
was aimed at being at bit tounge in cheek dark humour. But I
should have realised that as over here, you'll also have
certain section of people that are so blinkered in their beliefs
and lifestyles that they will take any oppitunity to climb on
their soap box and condem the lifestyles of others. Sorry once
again, didn't mean to cause or offend anybody.

Hey Neph, yeah it was rough for many back then and I try to be
as proactive as I can now to let guys know to comply with all
laws and regulations. Posts on forums where used as evidence in
some cases or helped the authorities to know where to go and
look for violators On a side note, I had a falconer order some
birds from me a few days ago and he said that often there are
other falconers who would be happy to trap and relocate problem
birds so I may post some more information on that later as they
have the legal ability to do that type of thing provided they
follow certain procedures and so forth. I just try to keep
educating guys when it comes up. :D ITS
