out birds

I live in one of the colder spots in Colorado. Last year at this
time i was in lock down. This year i have not locked down. I
have noticed that as its getting colder i am getting a few out
birds in each kit. In the warmer weather they were kiting very
well. Last three fly's they have started being out birds for a
third of their fly time. The kits are only seven to eight months
old so maybe its because the are reacting to rolling deeper or
their maturing into out birds. They are mixed with rollers that
are rolling short to medium depth. I just cut their feed back to
2 cups commercial pigeon feed for 21 birds. The kits are rolling
good and starting to work as a team. I don't like the idea of
out birds teaching other birds to be out birds. I hope i can
figure this out they seam like good rollers. I like rollers that
are of good depth.

I doubt the outflying is related to the weather or temps...my
birds actually seem to be kitting better than ever. (I fly year
'round every year). The problem is more likely related to the
stage of development of these individuals. I would tolerate it
for a couple flies and if it continues, cull the
outfliers...especia lly if you notice that other birds begin to
outfly also, following the outbirds. You can ruin the birds in a
good kit if you allow this to continue, and you cannot break
them from it. The only type of outflying that I will tolerate is
flying above the kit. (Some of those birds are deep rollers and
are wisely staying with, but above, the kit until they learn to
handle the roll.) It's hard to discipline yourself...especial ly
if the outbirds are 30-ft. spinners! But you cannot afford to
tolerate the fault, I promise. 7-8 month-old rollers should be
kitting well by now....Good luck!

I will keep an eye on these birds. I thought i was done culling
this year but maybe not. I never realized how much time and
patience it takes to get a good kit in the air. I do like the
challenge and look forward to see what happens to these kits.
Time to figure out next years mating's. Only four months away
for me. 8)

Hi Cliff, do you and Mike fly the same family of rollers?
Different birds different weather conditions, he mentioned
cutting back on feed, my opinion is that this is causing the
problem. I would probably add some corn to add fat to the diet
if things are getting colder and birds starting to act up. Not
all birds will have the same metabolism and react to changes the
same way all the time... ;D

Let us know if changing the feed changes the behavior. I would
be very surprised if it does....but hey, we might learn
something!

In watching your kit,Do you know what bird started this bad
habit?You should hold it and then fly,Do the same to the next
out bird till the kit is flying together and you out birds are
all out of the kit.Another thing you could try is put deeper
depth birds in one kit till others get there depth. The feed is
probably your problem, 21 birds times 1 1/2 to 2 tablespoons per
bird,NO MORE. :D Joe

Of course feed changes behavior, that's how we induce change;
for good or bad. He indicates he REDUCED the amount of feed.
That single act can cause one or more birds to change its flying
behavior i.e. out flying where it wasn't a problem before and
pulling other birds with it as it wants to land early due to
increased hunger. ::)

A little update on feeding some corn to birds. So I added 1/2
cup of corn to the 2 cups of commercial pigeon feed I have been
feeding my kits. The birds are kitting again. I really thinks
its because I'm giving them a little more feed then i was. They
are flying a little higher and a little longer also. Seams like
their not so interested in getting back to loft right away. I
think Tony got it right. They were reacting to the fact that I
just decreased their feed. 1/2 cup more made a big difference
