hodgepodge birds/diet/flight time

Tony, some 2 months ago, you suggested that I put my birds on
straight wheat for 3 weeks, get'm flying 90 min. Afer 4 weeks of
wheat they are now rolling, no fluttering drop, also flying 90
minutes to 2hrs 15mi. They are flying very high but I'm proud
of that. As long as the ceiling is up, I'm gonna let them. I
know winter is on the way here, so I'll have to change feed
habits. 22 birds on 2cups 1/4 feed, trap within no more than 2
min. usually 1min. Got 16 yb rubys in kit box, 12 flying 2
observing,, 4 on the floor breeder pen, 2 sets of eggs under
hodgepodge birds for fostering and my grizzle is incubating her
own! So things are finally looking better for me. Thanks to you
and the rest of members for helping me. If it sounds like I'm
crowing?? Yea!! chesley

Hi Chelsey, good job! You can slowly start to pull back on the
wheat and get them closer to 90 minutes or a bit less. Also, you
really don't want them flying too high for too long as you then
invite the possibility of overfly's and if you do, say "bye bye"
to maybe your entire kit! Good work and keep us updated. ;)

chesley.... Are your birds still on straight wheat after the 4
week period?? If not, what are you feeding now? Have you cut
them back at all to reduce their fly time? Finally, how old
were these birds when you went to straight wheat?

Hello Windjammer : How did you come up with that handle ? Its a
good'en!! Well after Tony suggested wheat, they were on that
for 4 weeks before they stop the fluttering stuff, they were on
wheat another 4 weeks probably before I posted, They are still
on wheat. From the youngest to the oldest is probably 3 months
age difference with the oldest probably 10 months. This is age
bracket where i started the wheat. So all don't roll as well as
others, and the whole kit isn't, in my openion all that great,
I've hung on to them just to have something to fly, untill my
Rubys get seasoned in !They too have an age spread, I just
hope they will be all that I'm hyped up to be expecting LOL. I
haven' t kept good records of the hp birds, I do have
documentation on the Rubys . As for cutting feed ? I started
that this morning. They flew 1hr 45mn, Lucky it was clear blue
sky. I'll keep them on wheat cut by 1/4 untill i see a change.
I'm thinking I may have to give them some pellet soon for a
week or so for nutrition, and then go back to wheat or
50w/50/milo, If it sounds like That I know what I'm doing ??
belive me I don't LOL I bought Tonys book about feeding,
flying, breeding; Management etc about a year ago; read it 2
times before putting it down, next morning went to the loft,
birds starred me down, and fired me ! ??? Thanks for the

Now its about 430am and I woke up thinking about my comment
about Tonys book! Hey its been a bless to me, and I have to
recomend it to anyone. Breeding better rollers title of book .
I was just tryin to be a little humerous about making the birds
follow a plan!! chesley.

Hey Chesley... I got that handle from rid'en my Harley many many
years ago. Back then it was "hdwindjammner"... not anything to
do with the birds though.. But, now it comes in kind'a
handy...haha I fought with myself over this feed situation for
a very long. For the life of me, I can't understand how just 1
grain of seed can give complete nutritional value... I guess I
will just have to take the word of those who are doing it
successfully... That will be my NEW thought process for the New
Year's breeding season..... Hope this all works out for you nad
the birds....

Hey windjammer I also had the same feeling about one grain.
But wheat is suppose to aid in roll I think, surpress urge not
to roll. I feed breeders 3 grain scratch feed from local feed
store. I'll take in my case 3 cups of that and add 1 cup of
pigeon pellet to that, mix it all up, if I wanna give birds a
vitimen powder I throw that in there too if its powder like 1/4
tea spoon. I have started adding now from tractor supply a
sealed pack of electorlite and vitimen combined. Its for horses
and poultry. Just did it once, but I think It will work., got to
get dosage right! I might even do probiates?? this way have to
reduce it though. I don't like pro-b's in water much, it spoils,
it stinks and wasteful. But any how what ever concoction that I
mix with the feed I will alway mix up real good , then put about
1/2 table spoon of sunflower oil on that, mix it good. It holds
all powders to grains including pellet powder, slides down the
gullet better and they get mothers vinegar in water 1tlbs per
gal. Put that in a laundry detergent jug mix good and then
pour out to birds what containers they have. Sanatize water
bottles in/out daily. As for kit birds, all I have Is the
hodgepodge kit, and they are stright wheat, I have some rubys
ybs and they get the mixed concoction, untill they show signs of
wanting to do some serious roll,All birds get this mix except
kits flyers. when the rubys start to roll, I plan to gradually
put them on wheat only. I plan to put the HP birds on pellets
soon for a couple of weeks to build them back up all health
wise. Might do that when the hawks get bad!! Then I'll run'em
on wheat again, and then It'll probably Be 6 weeks before they
are back to where I pulled them from. These birds are not
anything to brag about, but I am learning as I go. Scratch feed
isn't a complete ration nor is wheat by itself. pellets are and
has every thing imaginable for pigeons. I have heard that it
will make them fly lower if used as daily only food source.Oh
well I better get out of here. Just my stradgey at this point in
time [only] !! chesley , I'm just a backwoods flyer 'no

Chesley..... thanks for all the info... I got a lot to put in my
little "birdie notebook".... By the way I started my straight
wheat feeding last nite. I'll be anxious to start to see some
results... I am feeding 1 cup per 10 birds for starters...

Ross what part of the USA or other country are you located? I
haven't seen many hawks here in SE georgia yet. hope I don't.
I had one last week and one this week, but the birds won out. I
have a few culls that I think I'll send up as scouts and see
what I can draw from that. Mostly coopers are all I have to
contend with. Red tail hawk fly by at times, but usually the
pigeon can out manover those, If you have to shut down till
spring ? man thats the pits!! Good day- chesley
