hold over birds

Someone tell me what holdover birds are, and for what purpose?
I can only guess that they may be to add to next years kits. I
know what left over birds are ! # of birds left over this season
after skysharks and culling, less any ill fated. No I hear this
phrase holdover birds, but I"m new still and I don't know
exactly what it pretains to or related to what etc. Thanks

Chesley , hold over birds are a lot like when you call your
Insurance company to make a claim and they put you on hold!
Hold over birds or the term hold over birds is actually an
Oxymoron! I have been told many versions of this! The most
popular believe according to some is that hold over birds are
those that need more time to develop! JMO

For me holdover birds are birds that were born late in the year
and were not able to get flown due to bops.
I raised a group of 12 holdovers last year and will never do it
again. I tried flying them this spring and it took about a
month just to get them to fly at least 5-10 minutes. Then the
remainder of the year to get them to where they would kit and
fly as a team. Through all the losses and flyaways I have 5
left from that bunch.
It is so much easier to get the young birds up in the air and
kitting and starting to roll...then when spring comes they are
ready to go and it makes it so much more enjoyable to get them
back in the air.

Thanks LittleJohn, I saw exactly what you described with my
neighbors birds. He kept about 30 birds through fall and winter,
and tried to make something out of them this spring, and like
you said, just didnt work. He gave them to his brother. All he
wanted was a buch of birds to let out in his back yard. They
were not real good birds breed wise. thanks I'll remember that.

Hold over birds are just what it says, they are birds that are
left over ( or held over ) from the previous year ( or years, )
whether they be one or more years old or even late breds from
the previous year.
As I travel south for March and some of April, I can't start
my breeding until I return home which means that my first round
dosen't hatch until the month of May.
Because of the hawks I have to lock them down around the first
week of September, which only gives them about three months of
development time, so each spring starting in late April, I fly
these hold overs and they really start to turn it on in June or
July.
I try to give them at least two years in the air before I select
any for the breeding loft.
Boy, do I ever miss the days when I could fly hawk free all year
long!
