First attack

Well, I guess I am in for an early attack season!!! The other
day I had one of my young bird kits in the air for about 45
minutes. As they were in the process of landing they were
ambushed by an Air Shark.... I BLASTED it right out of the
air.... and I know what your thinking.... I gave it a BLAST
from a marine air horn. I guess I surprised it, cause when I
gave a blast of air, the hawk hit the ground and then took off
right back to the wood line... Luckily for me, early that
morning I just happened to pick one up at my local Wal-Mart to
be prepared for the up coming season. As I was walking back to
the loft to hang it up, that's when the attack took place.
Also, I didn't lose any birds this time.....

THAT is an impressive report! After it hit the tree line did you
see it again hanging around or was it just gone? Also, how did
the kit birds respond to the blast? I wonder what would happen
in the future if to prevent an attack from even occurring you
would simply blast the horn toward the tree line as the birds
were coming in to land?
What do any animal rights lurkers who might read this thread
think of this tactic? Doesn't seem to harm them at all. But even
just the thought of such tactics probably upset the extremists.

Maybe you should put up there "no sky sharks were hurt in the
blasting of this horn..." ;D
However, do not know what the MBTA might say about this
seemingly harmless effort to protect ones stock...be sure to
comply though.

Big 10/4 on the blast. Its been awhile since I've used cb
talk. Is it 4/10 or -- think it 10/4 ::) I've seen one cooper
here already. Cayotes, foxes, hawks get my bantams and guneias.
when they finish them off this time I'm quittin except for
pegeons... chesley

WOW..... I am very impressed with the responses.... I thought
for sure I would get the" proverbial" ATTACK because I tried to
defend the safety my birds.... Thanks Guys ... 10/4 Chesley you
got that right..... ;D once a CB'er always a CB'er....
To be truthfully honest with you Tony, it happened so fast I
never noticed the reaction of the Ruby's from the air blast..
They all just scattered every which way. I was too concerned
with distracting the shark. I guess I was lucky in that
respect. After the SHOCK of the air blast and it bouncing off
the ground the shark just flew in the direction of the wood line
which is about 500ft behind my loft and was never seen after
that... I heard of this method several years back when I first
got interested in rollers and went out and bought an air horn
but, never had a real opportunity to see how affect it real
was..... Now, I KNOW it really does work. The worst part about
this whole ordeal is I have 2 Owls that are about 24" tall with
the swiveling heads on the roof of my loft. One at each side of
the loft where the birds land and the air shark came that close
to the loft. Guess I might as well put them back in the my barn
in the boxes they came in...haha
Or maybe next time, if I have enough warning I'll put up my
remote control helicopter and let it chase the BOP out of MY
FLY ZONE.....How about that? ??? ;D

Well I've got an air blaster on my boat, since you brought that
up, think I'll just borrow it off the boat, give it a blast or
two to get the birds use to it. I'd surley hate for sky shark
to hit the ground like you said, wouldn"t wanna see it get
hurt. redtail hawk hangs out by ole pond at my house. I think
he's after frogs. He never yet tried to do a pigeon. I think
they can last longer,fly better , out manouver him. But yea
thanks wind jammer for the tid bid on the marine horn blaster.

Windjammer: Thanks for the good tip on using an air horn.
I keep two pieces of 2 x 4 about 12 inches long handy and clap
them together when I get an attack by a BOP. The sharp noise
this makes sounds a lot like the crack of a 22 rifle.
It really works, but unfortunately if the BOP is really hungry
or is older and more experienced, it doesn't work as well. --
watch your fingers if you try this! LOL
Even if it only works some of the time it's better than doing
nothing to protect you birds.

George..... it's funny you mentioned the pieces of 2x4's. I also
tried that one too at one point. And by the way, getting your
figure in the way "REALLY" does hurt...haha. I have also use
many other things, such as banging an aluminum dog water bowel
with a long screw driver or
just throwing the bowel in the direction of the attack, yelling"
as loud as I could, even just simply "clapping" my hands
frantically. I even went to the expense of hanging old CD's
around , even one of those round silver colored globes on a
pedestal you see in some peoples gardens. But, like you said,
if they are really "hungry or use to it " NOTHING" works too
long.. ya gotta keep mixing things up. Try not to let them get
use to anything one thing . And as far as the "Air Shark"
hitting the ground..... well.... that's the least of my worries

Had coopershark attack to day. Had let my ole hodgepodge
breeders out today about 1;30p and some friendns came to the
house and stayed utill about 3:30. then I walked out to check
birds, they were on ground pecking on grass etc. all of sudden
they took off like moodys goose. I looked and the shark went
through them as they were gettin up. I lost track as he went
down behind pigeon house. As far as i can tell I'm not missin
any birds except him, my neighbor back across the woods behind
me, said he checked his birds about 5pm said the shark was
setting on his pigeon pen. think I'll clean off the top of my
pen so he can perch there. I have bird feeder out there and
b-bath lots of doves and sometimes a friendly crow comes in. I
might as well cater to the shark also. I wasn't prepared for
that this day, but most of the time its always a surprise ! Have
