my youngens are about 12 days old now and are starting to get
out the nesting bowl. would I be able to change the straw and
clean the nesting bowl because it covered in poo or would I have
to leave it ?

That depends on the parents, but at that age I have done so with
no problems. I usually replace the nesting pad, and dust it
with sevin dust to prevent any bugs from bothering them. I have
also used tobacco stems and they work great in preventing bugs
as well.
I dont recommend using straw as it holds moisture and harbors
insects. Keep the nest dry and clean and your babies will soon
be healthy and out of the nest in another week-week and a half.

Agreed, straw a no no for the nest. Change it if damp, if things
are "dry", consider not bothering them. Otherwise its simply
your aesthetic preference. ;D

Pine needles, hay, tobacco stems, wood shavings. Maybe someone
else has a few other materials they can mention?

FOR THE LAST 5 YEARS I HAVE USED CEDAR CURLS ONTOP OF A HANDFULL
OF WOOD PELLETS IN THE NEST BOWL.
THE CEDAR CURLS COME IN A SMALLER SIZED BALE(HALF THE SIZE OF A
HAY BALE) AND ABOUT THE SIZE OF A BAG OF CEDAR SHAVINGS.
ALSO SOME POULTRY DUST MIXED IN HELPS KEEP THE FLYS AND BUGS
AWAY.
