The keys to how pumped hydroelectric energy works

Although it is a priority responsibility of the global North,
this does not mean that it is "only a matter of the North", as
is often argued in the public debate, and that the South has to
claim its "right to development", since they are the called
development and the logic of unsustainable growth that today
pushes us to collapse.
Degrowth is a demand for global justice, within the framework of
an already damaged planet. In addition, as various degrowth
leaders have warned (such as Giorgos Kallis, Federico India

and Jason Hickel, among
others), the progressive reduction of social metabolism would
translate into less pressure on natural assets and territories
in the South, which would open a "conceptual space"23in the
global South necessary to move towards post-extractivism. As
Hickel states, “degrowth is a demand for decolonization.
The countries of the South must be free to organize their
resources and their work around the satisfaction of human needs
and not around the service of the growth of the North.

The complement to degrowth cannot be other than the payment of
the ecological debt to the peoples and countries of the South.
In accounting terms, climate debt is just one line on the
balance sheet of a broader ecological debt. Thus, the ecological
debt could be understood as the obligation and responsibility
that the industrialized countries of the North have towards the
countries of the South, for the plunder and usufruct of their
natural assets (oil, minerals, forests, biodiversity, marine
assets), at the expense of of the human energy of their peoples
and of the destruction, devastation and contamination of their
natural heritage and their own sources of subsistence25.
