Thinking about heading to east Tx for fishing
By: jipped genes Date: March 8, 2023, 7:23 pm

I heard Caddo lake is banging right now for bass fishing.
Thinking about throwing my kayak on top and driving out there
for the weekend. Not familiar with prespawn fishing in a natural
shallow weedy lake.
Tips?

Can you rely on google to give you information? Sounds
interesting.

Most of the lakes down there are pretty clear, correct? If that
is the case, you have to go with the lightest tackle you feel
comfortable with. I often here guys saying if it is clear water
they use stuff like 14-17 lbs fluoro and I about die laughing,
because I am over here using 8 lbs in the same water. Usually
catching 4-5x as many fish and if you have the right reel/drag
and rod combo, you will not break them off like you might think
you will. It just takes a lot longer to get them back to the
kayak.
Other than that, I would just bring a little bit of everything.
I have mentioned to you before, I am a soft plastics guy, so I
will have a couple gallon sized bags full of smaller baggies of
different soft plastics in different colors and sizes. A few
crankbaits, some spinners and frogs. You can never have enough
frogs or other top water baits if they are super aggressive.
If nothing is biting, I will go really small and throw on some
Bobby Garland original shads on a wide mouth jig. I crush bass
with those things.

Fuck it, weather is not ideal but I am going! If you wait for
the perfect conditions you might never go.
Yeah BC, I checked the guide reports but they don't give too
much away. But it gives me some ideas as to what baits to bring.
GF They have had some rain GF so the water is stained but not
dirty. That should help. Heaviest line I have is 15 lbs mono for
my worm/spinner bait rod. I have a crankin rod with 10 lbs line
for my lipless and crankin rod, a spinning rod with 20 lbs braid
and a long 8 lbs. fluoro leader for weightless stickbaits and
flukes. then my fav set up, a falcon lowrider custom top water
special with a shimano curado 100 series reel and 20 lbs braid.
Got soft plastic frogs, poppers and a spook Jr. which I caught
an 8 on a couple years ago.
Gonna fish from the boat house for kitty cats at night, smoke
cigars and drink brew.
Oh also got a Helix 7 yesterday from a buddy who bought it new 3
years ago and wanted a new helix 15 with mega live. So he sold
me the 7 for $100. Not bad. I do not have time to put it on my
kayak which is no big deal as Caddo lake is shallow. Average
depth where we will be is 3-4'.
I find it hard to pitch and flip from my kayak. That seems to be
the best way to catch the big mamas this time of year but I will
do my best. Will let y'all know when I get back.

Yeah, it is hard to flip and pitch seated so low to the water.
That is why I bought some Bonafide SS127's. I can stand all day
in those things. Being able to stand when I need to, makes
fishing from the kayak so much more enjoyable.

I have to be able to put it on to p of my car. I have to use a
light kayak. Wish I could put a hitch on my car. Center exit
exhaust where a hitch would go.
Well left thursday, came back just not. Me and my fishing buddy
drove over to Caddo. His girl's fam has a lake house. We arrived
to find there were 2 tourneys going on that weekend and another
next weekend. Then we had a big thunderstorm and a cold front
move through thurs evening. Friday there were kayak tourney
fishermen and boats everywhere. The kayak guys all had pedal or
trolling motor yaks, we were paddle only so our area was limited
and we fished beat up water. I lost a big bass that first day
right at the boat I will say 6lbs give or take. It was the only
bite we got.
Friday post front, 45 degrees cold, muddy water, We fished hard
for 3 hours at a time back to the house, ate and went out again.
I caught 2 and my pal got one all day and those were the only
bites. All were about 15-16 inches and healthy little fish. I
tried everything. Only thing I could get bit was 5" black with
blue flake yum dinger cast onto the bank then pulled silently
into the water. The fish were all in less than a foot of water.
We wasted a lot of time fishing 2-4' of water.
I caught 2 more this morning. Much warmer but still kayak and
boats everywhere. Same method. Still tried other things but
nothing worked.
Last night we sat on the dock and catfished. Caught several,
drank a few brews and enjoyed life
Even though it was not optimal, we had a great time. I love
Caddo lake. Cannot beat the scenery.
