Ah, yes, small towns.
Do you know anyone who is willing to endure her for a little
bit, have them go in and distract her with a visit or a shopping
trip while you are visiting the nice next-door neighbor? If
GMIL doesn't know you are there until afterwards, that might be
easier to deal with.

If you can't cut off the information train by cutting her off
your FB, then stop talking about the trip. If she doesn't know
you're coming, she can't plan anything. I'd let your other
friend know that you plan to come over and don't want to see
GMIL. If she comes over, no one says you have to let her in.
Make sure your friend knows that if she comes in, you will be
going out!

The people who you want to visit and who care about you will
know how she is. As for the others... well, let 'em gossip. What
does it matter in the end? I don't mean to sound flippant; I
know that sometimes it can be really hard to not give a damn
about what people think even if you know you shouldn't give a
damn. In the end, though, I think you'll be happier.
