How much consideration do you need to show tourists?

I work in central London and walk past the houses of parliaments
daily to catch the Tube home.
All year round the pavements are crowded with groups of
tourists. I'm fine to watch out for them, duck and dive through
the crowds and just keep repeating excuse me.
However, I have been shouted at few times because I have
unintentionally walked into someone's photograph. People are
taking pictures of each other on the pavements, posing in front
of the landmarks. One person physically tried to stop me once
and got a rather terse response and twice someone has raised
their voice because I ruined their picture.
It's not deliberate. I am just walking home after work.
Should I pay more attention to what people are doing or am I
right in thinking that if you are using a very busy street for
taking photos, you are the one who has to wait for a clear slot
to take it?
I know it's a very small thing and not a problem at all, I am
just curious as to whether or not I've been rude all this time.

I think it's nice to try to keep an eye out, but at the end of
the day, you are living your life and they are in a public
place. Just because some place is a tourist attraction doesn't
mean that people who live and work in the area have to treat it
as such.
I try to be nice to the tourists around here and will even offer
to take group pictures if I notice they have to keep splitting
into groups. HOWEVER, I have buses and/or trains to catch, and I
can't afford to wait while you block the entire sidewalk for a
good picture.
Basically, the politeness thing goes both ways.

I agree with Giggle Loop it's ridiculous to think you need to
spend every spare second looking out just in case a tourist
might be taking a picture. Having to take an extra minute to
take a picture is not a big deal having to wait for every single
tourist to take a picture = you'll never get home!

^ Hah. This. I've lived in big tourist areas as well and the
best you can do is swerve around when you see someone taking a
picture, and if you don't see them in time...well, having been a
tourist myself, I've never expected to be somewhere like the
Louvre or Westminster and to have the world come screeching to a
stop so I can get a picture.

As a tourist, I am much more annoyed by other tourists than I
am by locals going about their business. The number of times I
have had someone wander into my photo that was another tourist
not paying attention greatly outnumber the number of times
someone walking down the street has ended up in my photo. Plus,
you know, the great thing about digital photography is you can
just take another one, so even if someone does end up in my
photo it's not the end of the world. Plus, tourists who block
sidewalks and such to try and get photos are the rude ones, not
the people using the sidewalks to, you know, walk. As a local,
I try to be aware of what's going on around me, and would not
knowingly walk through someone's photo (and I don't mind waiting
a few seconds for someone to snap a photo), but at the end of
the day you've got to get where you're going, and the idea of
having a photo of Parliament with no one else in it is laughable
anyway.
I do stop and offer to take a group photo if I have a minute. I
feel like it's good travel karma for the next time I need a
photo taken.

Honestly, considering that they're most likely taking digital
photos, who cares? It is the most minor of inconveniences. You
have not just wasted 1/24th of their film and caused them to
spend money to have that worthless photo developed.

As Hardia and TychaBrahe point out, we are pretty much past the
days of film that needs to be developed, and you've cost them
money for that. It's digital cameras or phones, and if you
don't want the picture with that person in it, you delete it,
and take another.
My husband almost filled a 4gig card with pictures from his
recent trip, and is still sorting through them. Not every
picture you take is perfect.

Yeah, I had a great picture of Jackson Square in NOLA. The only
problem was the 1 tourist in it. My graphic designer friend made
him disappear. :)

Like everything in life, I think you just have to strike a
balance. If you notice that you're about to step into a
photograph try to avoid it, if you unwittingly do then don't
beat yourself up; like PP"s have said it's not like you've
ruined the film, they can just take another picture. Don't let
the exasperated tourists get to you, just because they're
annoyed doesn't mean that you've done anything wrong
The other side of it is that tourists have to realize that
they're not likely to get that perfect picture like in the
postcards. Between the locals and other tourists someone's going
to be in your shot.
