I sympathize with you. When hubby and I bought our house, we
made sure there was room for my mother, who lives in the
basement (note: she chose the basement bedroom). And since mom
had sold her house to move in with us, one of my sisters was
under the impression that mom had bought the house for me, and
was jealous that I'd gotten her money.
Nope, we bought it on our credit, have a mortgage, all that
stuff. But it took a bit of talking to convince my sister of
       that.

Maybe she heard some inheritance horror stories from
       friends/co-workers and is now worrying.
When my grandmother died, she had a will that divided her estate
between her three sons. My father had financial power of
attorney before she died, and held the estate in trust for her.
He never filed the official copy of her will, and kept every
penny for himself, totally screwing his two brothers out of
their portion of it. It was a pretty substantial chunk of money,
too. Of course, he's a jerkwad in various other ways so his
behavior wasn't exactly a shock to anyone, but it seems the
world is rife with people who do the same thing to their family
members when a parent or grandparent dies.

Food for thought. If it's going to be a problem, maybe I can
convince Mom to do something more official. I'm in the same
position for my brother, but he made sure his is all official
and spelled out very clearly, which actually makes me feel
       better about holding the responsibility.

I'd recommed your mother get a more formal will just to CYA
everyone's behind. Even if your sister was joking people do tend
to lose their minds when a loved one dies and money is involved.
My Aunt had 1 legal will for her finacial assests and one that
was informal (written and verbal) but it was for all her
personal effects and all things important to her. It caused some
major infighting and turned into a free for all and since it
wasn't 'offical and legal'. Items were stolen and smashed out of
jealousy everyone went insane. Probably didn't help my family
wasn't sane in the first place.
Even my grandfathers' will was ironclad and it still caused some
trying to sneak around it before they were caught. The sneaky
people were people who were the last people to expect to do
something like that. That was a huge saddening surprise.

I'm so glad I posted. I'll definitely talk with Mom tomorrow
and ask her to formalize something. My family's great, right up
       until we aren't. :P
       Thanks so much, everybody.

I hope your talk with your mom goes well. I think a formal will
might help settle any concerns your sister may have
(alternately, she might just decide she wants to be cranky, but
at that point, you've done all you can to help ease her mind).
After that, if she niggles at you, ask her point-blank if you've
ever done anything to make her think you'd screw her over, and
if not, why she's accusing you of it now.

It might not be a bad plan to make sure all your siblings get
copies of the will, too. It might calm them down a bit.

I talked to Mom today, and she agreed. I'll see to it that she
gets plenty of copies as well.
