In the comics, everyone has the virus in them without knowing
it. So it doesn't matter how you die..if you never even touched
a walker, you will still turn into one whenever you die, even if
it's from natural causes. So that's why Randall changed.

So then why haven't we had the zombie apocalypse before now?

The virus was a new thing. It somehow infected everyone, and
then people started dying and re-animating and spreading it
through lethal bites. So it wasn't a "we've always been infected
since always" type of disease, but a "this disease started, and
we don't know how, but now everyone is a carrier for it".

I have a question for those of you who have read the comics.
After watching the premiere episode of "The Walking Dead," I was
on a forum where a number of people were saying how awful it was
to watch the scene where the horse was killed. At this, someone
posted "If you think that is bad, don't read the comics, because
one character (commits a disturbing act) upon a puppy." I
honestly have no idea if this person was making a sarcastic
quip, or if this really was in the comics. Can someone let me
know if there is a shocking animal abuse scene in the comics?

It's been a while since I read them, but I do remember a little
kid who kinda starts becoming a serial killer and kills animals.
It's the warning sign that being amongst all that death is
messing up the kids. I think that's what the poster was
referring to. But those kids were from the farm I think (twins),
and I haven't seen them yet.
