Kelsey and I clean a church that's across the street from a
funeral home. When there are funerals/wakes, the church's
parking lot fills up quickly. When this happens, if I'm driving,
I'll park behind the church and walk a bit because it frees up a
space closer to the funeral home for mourners. Kelsey will take
any available spot closer to the church and has even parked in
the funeral home's lot when a space opened. He gets bemused or
even a little annoyed when I try and leave spots for mourners.
Now, Kelsey's on the verge of a diagnosis of Asperger's, and
that's likely affecting his view here, so I asked him about it.
He doesn't see the point in leaving a space open for mourners as
a kindness. He figures we won't be in the space but an hour, and
it's only one space, and the lot belongs to the church so we're
entitled to it.
I thought it'd be an interesting discussion; what do you think?

I'm with you on this one... It's a small thing, but when a
person is mourning, the small things can make all the difference
in the world.

I would probably leave an open space as well, but I don't think
your husband is wrong, per say.

I think it falls into the it's considerate to do it but not
inconsiderate if you don't category. I'm not sure what
difference one parking space would make, but if you can exercise
that extra bit of kindness, why not?

That's how I see it, too. The "lot" in question is really a row
of spaces along the street, one on the funeral home's side and
one on the church's side, so it's only a couple of dozen spaces
total. Guess that would have been good information to include
in the OP, huh? Sorry about that.

I agree with you. What Kelsey is doing isn't rude as such, but
inconsiderate.

In my case, it would depend on how I was feeling that day, how
much I can deal with the amount of walking.
But it really is kind of you to leave a space open for mourners.
