I tip about the same as I do for delivery drivers (around 10%,
or a dollar or two, whichever is easier and doesn't look too
stingy), if it's a sit-down restaurant where the person boxing
up my food might be a server taking time away from his tables.
But I don't think it requires the 15-20% of sit-down service
because it's not sit-down service. You don't get waited on
through a meal. You have someone boxing up your food. Not the
same at all.

I don't tip and I've never been with anyone who has done (when
we've picked up takeout).
It's takeout, tips are usually for service so who would the tip
be going to? I don't really considering carrying a bag from the
kitchen to the register deserving of a tip.

If the restaurant is counter service, and there's not much
difference between me and the people dining in, then I don't
tip. I mean, Panda Express has tables, but they don't have
waiters. There's not much difference between my eating there
and my eating up in my office, so no tip.
An exception to that would be some place like Sizzler. At
Sizzler you order at a counter and take a number. Someone
brings your order to your table and gets you drink refills.
Also, they do all-you-can-eat shrimp specials, so your server
spends some time with you, but doesn't take your order. At
Sizzler I tip 10% if I've ordered something from the kitchen and
$5 if I've only ordered the salad bar, and the server is only
bringing me drink refills.
If the restaurant has table service, and the waiter is taking
time away from serving his tipping tables to pack my order, I
tip about 10%. So this would be like Chili's carryout.

I'm thinking of restaurants that have table service (I was at PF
Changs when I started wondering about this).
My rationale is that someone has to go box everything up and get
it out to me, so I may as well put a couple of bucks into the
tip pool.

I also only tip so I don't seem like a douche, which is why I
tip irregularly. I don't think you have to tip on takeout and I
war between wanting them to like me & get me food faster and
feeling bad cause by tipping I reinforce their entitlement to
tipping.

I presume you are talking about tipping at a place that does
carry-out only, or carry-out plus bus-your-own counter service,
such as at McDonald's? Because in the US, these people are
always paid a minimum wage, whereas servers at restaurants are
often not. My nephew worked at a large taco chain and was
making $2/hr more than minimum wage. I do think in those
circumstances that expecting a tip is entitled, and I don't tip
unless I get very special service. I used to frequent one place
where every Wednesday I ordered the same thing. They actually
would see me coming out of the subway tunnel and start prepping
my drink so that I could walk right in and pay for it and walk
out. I did tip them, and handsomely.
I realize that some people don't like the American standard of
paying below-minimum wages and having tipping make up the
difference. I'm torn on the subject. I like the idea that I
can reward someone who goes out of their way to make my dining
experience special, and that I have a way to punish poor service
(and I do distinguish between the server's service and things
they can't control, like the kitchen and the bar).
But if this is the culture, it's not entitled to expect a tip,
any more than it is for a server in a non-tipping country to be
paid a living wage.

The places I generally get takeout from are bus yourself
teriyaki counters. There are places to sit, but you usually
bring your own food to the table from the counter if you eat in.
I agree that it's wrong to pay servers below minimum wage, in my
state our servers do get minimum wage. I don't begrudge waiters
tips at all or think they shouldn't expect a tip because they're
paid minimum wage. I just go back and forth on take out, because
when I see that tip jar right under where they hand me my change
it's noticed if I don't contribute. And like you I always tip at
the place I go regularly because they're very nice and make
waiting comfy for me.

My husband and I have started putting a dollar in the tip jar
when we pick up take out to bring home, but after reading
threads like this, I really think I'm going to do that only at
the places where I pick up food regularly. I don't think I'm
going to beat myself up about not leaving a tip at the odd
sandwich joint or bistro.

If I get delivery to my place, I'll tip a few bucks. I used to
tip a flat 3 bucks when I lived at my old apartment because it
was a 3rd floor walkup. And I tended to order my Chinese when it
was cold out.
