Tipping on takeout orders (US related)

I occasionally place an order at a restaurant and go there
myself to pick it up. What percentage do you typically tip for
takeout? Do you go for the full 15-20%? 10%? 5%?

I tip between $1-5 depending on how I feel and how much cash I
have at the time. Since I've never gotten take out from a place
that's a sit down restaurant and generally go to chinese
counters I figure I don't have to do math when I tip there. I
tip $1 for a single meal and more if the order is for more
people or I'm in a generous mood. About 20% of the time I leave
no tip at all. I always tip at the place right down the street
from my house because they're always cheery and have a bunch of
magazines to read while you wait.

I usually tip $2-3 unless the order is unusually big or
complicated.

Personally, I usually tip a dollar or two.
When I worked as a hostess at a restaurant, the policy was for
me to deal with takeout orders instead of the waitstaff. Most
people didn't tip, and I never thought twice about it- it was
only a couple minutes work for me, and I was getting paid just
over minimum wage, instead of server-wage. I sure did love the
tippers, though!

So it's more like a couple of bucks than a specific percentage?
Whew! I was panicking for a moment last night when I picked up
some take away. I usually leave about $3-4 tip, but I saw a
receipt at the take away counter that left a full %20. Maybe
that guy was just feeling extra happy that night.

I always wonder about that, too. To me, it doesn't seem like a
situation that requires tipping, but I feel bad if I don't.

Yeah, it's one of those things where my only reason for doing it
is because I feel like a shmuck if I don't.

I usually tip a couple of bucks, though I go to 10-15% for
places that have wait services. I do not use the car side to go
places, but if I did I would tip about 15% there.

For me, it depends on the place. If it's something like Papa
Johns or Pizza hut where there isn't any dine-in seating, I
usually don't leave a tip for carryout
If it's a place where people come in to sit and eat, I try to
leave a couple bucks, but I don't take the time to figure out a
particular percentage.
