How to ask this of boss?

I have been at my current job for a year now. Today is my first
day back after taking a *planned* one week vacation. (the two
weeks last April do NOT count as vacation..) I'm participating
in a study abroad this summer for all of May and the first two
weeks of June. So, in essence, I need to let my boss know now.
I have no idea how to ask my boss for a month and a half leave
as well as asking if I'll have a job when I get back in June.
She's not in today, so it'll be Wednesday at the earliest for me
to ask.
Halp please!

I think you need to tell her that you are studying abroad, and
that you need to know what your options are.
I don't know what kind of work you do, but there are very few
employers that would keep a persons job, so keep that in mind
when you discuss it with her.
I deleted my last sentence because it came across much harsher
than I intended.

I think it depends on your relationship with your boss. I had
one job where all we had to do was let the manager know when
we'd be leaving and when we would be back, then follow up when
we got back into town to get back on the schedule. I could take
entire summers off, no problems.
I also had a job when I got an internship with the place I work
now. We were a pretty laid-back group, so I just went to my
manager and said, "I just found out I got this awesome
internship opportunity. I'm going to need to be gone for ten
weeks during the summer. Does the company hold jobs for
extended periods for situations like this, or am I going to be
job hunting when I come back?" For a more formal office, I
would recommend just asking whether or not the company will hold
a job if an employee needs to take an extended period of leave,
then get into the specifics of your situation.

I'd ask about any sabbatical options.
But really, just be upfront with the boss. Sit down and tell
them you're studying abroad for 1.5 months from date-date and
ask whether such a long leave would be permissible of whether
you'd need to resign the position.

Is your current job through your school? Those tend to be
pretty flexible about study abroad opportunities.

No, those are all for those on work-study, sadly. I kind of want
to say "Boss, part of my degree requires a study abroad. I found
out over spring break that I was accepted into the summer
program and that I got the financial aid to cover it. My trip
dates are X to X. Will that be okay or should I start looking
for a new job?"
They are surprisingly flexible- my schedule changes as my
classes do, over the last summer they were okay with my doctor's
appointments, and since I don't have a car right now, they are
letting me leave a bit early to catch the bus to go to class.
Here's to hoping she's in a good mood Wednesday.

I think this is fine, but leave out the should I start looking
for a new job bit, that sounds quite aggressive. Just tell her
how it is and ask what your options are. It may very well be
that she will tell you good luck and use me as a reference, or
she may be willing to work something out. Just go in positively,
just with the facts and listen to what she says.
