My garlic is growing nicely, and the husband mentioned that he
saw onions peeking out today. My peas are getting huge.
Marigolds are still tiny, should have started them earlier
maybe. I can't wait to get them in the ground so I stop
forgetting they exist for days at a time :P Hopefully once tax
season is over, we can get our veggie bed built and start some
more plants.

Thanks for the heads up, G-Lady! Apparently, the woman I bought
my house from in August quit watering last summer between when
the contract was signed and closing, so I've been dealing with a
lot of weeds and dead grass. I went out and raked it tonight
and am watering it now -- can't wait to see new green runners!
Of course, I'm also thinking I'll go get a few squares of sod.
A gardening guru I know said that you can basically just plop
down St. Augustine sod on dirt and it'll take root and grow
(with proper watering and maintenance, of course).
Also, I've been working on the flower bed in the backyard (had
to pull out a few dead bushes and a dead crepe myrtle). In
addition to the existing impatiens, a surviving crepe myrtle,
and two nondescript bushes, there is now two George L. Taber
azaleas, an esperanza, a cape plumbago, two Bradford pear trees,
a gardenia, a hibiscus, and Confederate (star) jasmine in both
corners (but not a partridge in a pear tree). I'd planted a
hydrangea there, but it was getting too much sun, so I moved it
to a shadier spot next to the house. It's still looking pretty
pathetic, but we'll see if it can pull itself together.

I ended up only seeding the back yard last month and doing both
yards with a "Weed N Feed" product for Southern yards about a
week or two ago. I still need to de-thatch, but I'm already
noticing a lot of the clover, black medic, and the rye grass is
dying back. If we have a rainy weekend later this month, I may
apply the Weed N Feed again.
Hopefully, the St A grass will start taking over again once I
get that thatch up. At least the ground under it fairly soft.
The exposed dirt is really compacted, but there's too many
shallow tree roots for me to consider an aerator and I'm too
lazy to get the spiked shoes and do it by hand (or by foot as
the case may be).
I should also look into renting a chipper and cut out all the
dead limbs in my lugustrum and photinias hedges. I need to thin
my crepe myrtles too. (I refuse to "top" them. Topping is
murder! And it looks stupid too!)

Of course as soon as DH got some planting done, we got a cold
snap. Frost advisory for tonight, so I'll be covering them with
a sheet to hopefully hold in some warmth.
Next weekend I'm hopefully going to pick up some flowers to
plant in the rest of the bed and some herbs in pots for the edge
of the porch. Then my only worry will be keeping the kid out of
them on his outdoor excursions.

My marigold sprouts didn't make it :( Beans are still growing,
though. They all spent Easter outside, because we needed the
space, and I think the chance from room temperature to cool
temps was too much for them. Either that or they dried out in
the direct sunlight.

The clover, rye grass, dollar weed, black medic, and a few other
unidentified weeds are dying back. I've raked up some of the
thatch from last year's St Aug grass that succumbed to the
drought. The new runners are starting to fill in the bare
patches - very very s l o w l y.
On a side note, we have some rogue plants in the compost bed.
We decided not to do a veg garden this year, so we're continuing
to put our compostables in there to build the nutrients. A few
kitchen scraps have taken root. We have a sunflower (I have no
idea where that came from), an onion, and a potato. I let the
sunflower go to seed - maybe I can get a sunflower forest to
grow in along the exposed fence we share with our back neighbors
and get a little privacy.

Thank you. It is the product of quite a few years. In fact,
the onion chives, at least one of the plants is one I got from
my mother. The rest is accumulation over time, especially now
that we have enough yard to hold it all. The yarrow, sweet
woodruff, soapwort, and mints all cover quite a stretch of yard.
I'll also admit, I've managed to kill off a number of them
before, and had to start over with new plants.
Note to herb lovers: the salad burnet leaves taste like cucumber
(and so are really good in salads), and the lovage leaves taste
like celery. Also, if you ever get any garlic chives, and let
them go to seed without cutting those off, you will soon have
*LOTS* of garlic chive plants that you hadn't intended to have.
And I will start getting more yardwork done if I manage to
ignore that one of the channels here has put 2 episodes of "Big
Bang Theory" on from 6-7pm, and it has been cutting into my
gardening time. I just need to break down and buy the dvd's,
and get yardwork done. ;D
