I found a little corner that should work for my onions and
garlic. We're grilling lunch, then getting to work. We're
expecting rain this afternoon, hopefully we can beat it.
Does anyone here know roses? We planted two rose bushes last
summer. One of them didn't respond well to the heat, and lost a
lot of branches on one side. It's totally uneven now :( Anyone
know if it will eventually even out? Any tips for getting that
side to grow back? It's a healthy plant otherwise. I really
want my beautiful, lush rosebushes flanking the porch steps.
Hardia, I usually just replant basil and rosemary in spring, but
I know people who bring them in. Basil may end up getting
scraggly. I don't know anything about growing dill. Mint will
thrive whether you like it or not. It will happily take over
your entire yard, and you'll have nothing but giant mintbushes
:P It's fun to grow, but definitely definitely definitely,
whatever else you do, grow it in a pot. Possibly a pot in its
own airtight quarantine chamber ;) (On the patio is probably
fine, too).

Definitely keep the mint in pots. It tends to bully its way
into other beds if it's not properly restrained, er, contained.
Most herbs are super easy. Just make sure the soils drains
well, especially if growing herbs often found in Mediterranean
cuisine.

Rainha, what kind of roses are they? Are they climbers or
regular rose bushes?
I have had rose bushes over the years, and I used to cut them
back almost to the ground when they got all uneven. It never
seemed to hurt them at all.

we're in a tiny apartment right now, and I really miss our
garden. Not that I'm much of a gardener, I mostly got excited
about digging up the soil and planting everything, and left the
maintenance to my husband until it was time to pick ;D
We went to a lecture at the local library by a guy who runs a
heirloom seed catalog (

), and he inspired us to grow
Quinoa. It was super easy, it grows very similar to pigweed!
They've got lots of great looking vegetables, if I had a garden
right now I'd be ordering from them for sure.
We also grew scads and scads and scads of different kinds of
peas. Then we argued about how to eat them. My husband wanted to
steam some of them. Fresh peas! I don't know what he was
thinking, they need to be eaten right off the vine! He also
insisted on putting in three zucchini plants. His theory was
that we could eat stuffed zucchini blossoms to keep the number
down, which we didn't even do once. To this day I'm still a bit
sick of zucchini.

Monkeypants, they're normal rose bushes. The one in question is
a floribunda, if I recall correctly. I can post a photo later.

If it is a Floribunda, they do really well when they are cut way
back.

I checked, it's a floribunda Day Breaker. I don't know if the
particular variety of floribunda makes a difference. The rose
in the other bed is a David Austin Molineux. The Molineux is
supposed to be stronger, so we expected it to surpass the
floribunda, at least for awhile, but the goal is eventually for
them to be roughly the same size. The beds are going to take at
least a few years to be really fully planted anyway, so I'm
willing to wait, but I'd hate to have one giant rose and one
tiny rose. Especially since the Molineux side is his and the
floribunda side is mine ;)

Here's the whole house, you can see the sad rose on the right,
and the big happy rose on the left. You can also see the shiny
new tulips I just planted :) I'll do more tulip bulbs this
fall, a row of marigolds along the border, and the outside
corners both have creeping phlox. My phlox is much creepier
than his. If anyone has any ideas for a low maintenance
perennial that will bloom after the tulips are done, for in
between tulips and marigolds, I'm open to suggestion - the goal
is to have at least one thing blooming from spring through late
summer, and everything else just acting like pretty greenery.
I'm also looking for a nice perennial for the back outside
corners, to balance out the rose bushes, if anyone has any
brilliant ideas. Eventually, we'll either mulch, or get a nice
groundcover started. We also desperately need to re-sod :P

That little one won't even out, you need to clip them both back.
And the sooner the better since the leaves have sprouted.

I'm giving the container garden on the balcony another shot this
year. 2 years ago is was fabulous. Last year it was terrible.
Hopefully this year will be better. It is so much nicer to just
go snip the herbs I need than have to remember to buy them at
the market.

I love gardening.
Last year I really, really worked on my garden. I expanded my
flower beds in the front and back, pulled out some holly bushes
that the previous owners had planted, and replaced them with
flowering quince and roses.
I have a pretty good green thumb. I've started hollyhocks (black
beauty variety), poppies (icelandic and the classic red ones),
red morning glories, and another annual flowering vine (whose
name escapes me at the moment) from seed so far this year. I
also started pumpkins and peppers with seeds I took from my
plants last year.
I have a lot of roses. I think I have...oh..9 rose bushes that I
planted, plus one massive wild rose that sprouted in my flower
bed shortly after we bought the house. My roses are mostly
floribundas, with some hybrid tea roses mixed in as well. I very
heavily favor orange and red roses, though one is lilac. I have
an orange rose so bright it's practically neon..like the color
of traffic cones.
I also have a soft spot for columbines. I adore columbines and
have several in my garden.
