You really had to say that?
   DIR By: HeatherMuoz

       ---------------------------------------------------------
I hate Michael's Arts and Craft stores. I really do. And I
will tell this story knowing that I just might be looking way
too hard to be annoyed. But I do promise that I went in
cheerful and trying to think this is the day they will be cool.
I haven't been in Michaels since I think last October? I avoid
it like the plague. I had to go in for a PTA matter.
I called in this morning to see if they had 8 wooden letters we
needed to complete a mural at the school. The lady said she had
them and would leave them at customer service for me. I thanked
her and thought yay, in and out.
I get there and wait in line. It's my turn, I tell them there
should be some letters for me there. They get it, everything
fine. I check the letters and instead of a P, it was a B. I
said, "Oh I needed a P not a B. Can you tell me where these are
and I will swap it out?" She apologized and said she will
finish ringing it up first. I said sure no problem, and P and B
sound so similar on the phone anyhow, it's no big deal.
I paid and she said she will be right back. I again said that
she didn't have to do that, that I could. She said it isn't a
problem. So I waited. Thinking wow, they really are nice!
Maybe all the mean ones left or just off that day.
Another lady come back with her and they have my letter. I
thanked them and turned to leave when the lady that I didn't
know said, "Well you know I spoke with you on the phone and I
know you said B." I actually didn't quite get all of what she
said since I was in the process of leaving so I stopped and
turned around and said, "I am sorry what did you say?" She
       said, "I know you said B and that's why I grabbed the B" I
smiled and said it wasn't a problem at all and B and P sound
similar. Especially on the phone. She said well no you
specifically said B as in Boy.
At this point I am slackjawed, I did not pitch a fit that there
was a wrong letter, I offered to get it, the cashier did
instead. I was not upset at all and in fact very pleasant. WTF
was this lady carrying on for?
I said, "If you want to get into specifics with me, I actually
told you it was for a country, P as in Portugal. along with the
rest of the letters. I don't know why you felt the need to come
and tell me this since I was fine with it. Was I upset?" and
turned to the cashier who was clearly embarrassed and staring
down at the floor. Cashier did look up and said no that I was
       fine with it.
The lady just turned around and left muttering something. I
       left steaming.
Was I overreacting? Was I too defensive with my last response?

You handled it well. The 2nd lady was being a class A jerk
about it. There was no need for her to comment on anything at
       all.

Nope, I think you're good. Standing up for yourself without
       being rude.
She really didn't need to say anything. Even if you had said 'B'
(mental goof-up or whatever), all that matters is that you
       wanted the 'P' now.

You did fine. I probably would have looked at her like she's
sprouted a 2nd head. Her comment was completely out of left
       field.

Agreed. You were fine and she was confrontational for absolutely
       no reason.

I wish I could think on my feet fast enough to handle a
       situation like that.

Blimey, what an oddly nasty encounter!
I work in customer service and even if someone is frustrating me
(ordering in a movie, then deciding then don't want it when it
comes in or having bought one elsewhere in the meantime), I
don't act like a donkeypants to them. You were polite, calm and
non-confrontational. She was straight up bitchy. There was
absolutely no cause or justification for this behaviour.

I think you were absolutely fine. I don't understand what she
thought she was accomplishing by saying something to you about
it. You weren't raising a fuss, or accusing her of anything. She
didn't need to try to "defend" herself since there was no
       confrontation.
Honestly, in your shoes I'd have probably had a word with the
       manager about her attitude.

By how she was dressed, I think she was the manager or at most a
keyholder. I did meet the store manager the last time I was
there and it was a man. A horrid man that made me swear off
Michael's and wouldn't set foot in for anything. If it wasn't
for the PTA already ordering this, I wouldn't have gone back. I
did however put it in the docs for future PTA people not to use
Michael's again. And I put contact for Hobby Lobby instead.
They will lose our business. That was very satisfying.

I am very non confrontational and easily startled into
       speechlessness.
But I was being honest in saying that I came in there on guard.
       I think that helped.
