Someone Passes out in Spin Class

This is a quick one really, but it was an awkward situation, and
I thought it might make for some interesting opinions...
The situation: We're about 5-10 minutes into a spin class when
someone (first spin class for them) starts to feel unwell and
gets off their bike and walks back out to the gym. The
instructor follows him out because he clearly is looking unwell.
He gets out to the gym floor and passes out. A few people jumped
off of their bikes and ran towards the situation (one of these
people was a nurse and assisted). Other people just stopped
pedaling and looked around. Some of us (myself and my husband
included) just got up and "ran" to keep our heart rates us and
       did nothing for the man.
After class I caught one girl make a comment to her friend (they
were part of the sit around and stop working out while waiting
for the teacher variety) along the lines of, "I can't believe
how callous some people were, just ignoring that situation and
keeping on with the workout". I wasn't really too bothered by
the comment, as there was nothing I could do for the man, and I
saw no reason to get my heart rate down for the time the
instructor was gone, as I have some fitness goals I was trying
       to meet.
So, what would you have done? What's the right thing to do?

As long as the guy was being assisted, I think you were fine.
There was no need for a huge crowd to stand around and stare at
       him

Really, in a situation like this, it is better to leave those
who can assist to get on with it. That is what happens in
emergency situations everywhere - do not crowd the patient, let
those who know what they are doing help.
Also, for the victim, it can be very distressing to come around
to a huge number of people staring at them.

I've been the person randomly passing out before, and let me
tell you, waking up to find forty bajillion strangers staring
down gape-mouthed at you is embarrassing as all get-out. :P
There's nothing callous about continuing to do your thing if the
person is already being helped. Heck, at sporting events, you
don't see the entire team crowded around someone who's hurt --
they make room for the trainer/coach(es) and simply wait to see
       what the outcome is.

I think only people who can actually help should go running
over. Everyone who can't help is just going to get in the way.

One of the things we emphasize while giving Safety Training to
our Supervisors, is to keep the gawkers at bay. The employees
are to keep working and let the proper people take care of the
       injured.

I can see why some people might think 'going on your way' is
callous, but the truth is that only about 1/10 people are able
to act properly in an emergency situation. Six freeze, three
panic or do the absolute wrong thing, and one does what is
possible and right. So, all the people who said you should
stay clear of the actual caregivers were correct -- you'd just
be in the way if you're not actually helping.
That said, if NO ONE else is helping, it's usually better to be
half right than all wrong... CPR with excessive
fractures/bruising is better than none, for example. In that
situation, ACT -- there was recently a drowning by someone who
walked into a fountain and then passed out. 5 emergency
vehicles carrying 30 or so EMT workers made it to the scene
quickly, and then stood there while he drowned because no one
was "water certified" to wade into the 18" water and roll the
       guy over...

Dissenting slightly from the others . . .
I agree that you didn't need to run over and gawk at the person
in distress as you would just be in the way. However, I wouldn't
have felt right jogging in place with someone have a medical
issue; it would have felt callous. I get that you wanted to keep
your heart rate up but it's just for a portion of one class out
of many. I suppose I would have waited quietly for the situation
       to be handled.

I don't know that it's inherently more wrong to wait running
rather than wait sitting still, though, which is what the others
were doing while criticizing the OP. I mean, some people would
start pacing in a tense situation, and I think directing that
into a more focused activity might be less distracting to
others, if that makes any sense. The sitters were essentially
ignoring the situation too, just with more gawking.

       I don't think it's necessarily rude or wrong but . . . there's a
dude passed out on the floor. It just seems, I don't know,
inappropriate* to worry about your heart rate. (*I'm having a
hard time coming up with the exact right word.) I don't think
the OP was wrong, per se, but I would have acted differently. I
don't see sitting quietly as ignoring but just being respectful
       of the situation.
