My friend has a van that I refer to as "HAL." Back-up cam with a
fisheye lens, so you can see around the sides, a light that goes
on if someone is in your blind spot, AND it starts blinking if
you turn on your signal in that direction. There are about
twenty dozen nifty features like this. I'm insanely jealous, but
there is also a downside: she says she is now a drooling idiot
when she drives their other car, a lowly ten-year-old Accord
with a stick shift.

I'll pull through if at all possible, otherwise I just suck it
up and back out. Backing into a space whenever possible seems,
to me, to take longer because you have to be more precise. At
some point you have to back up anyway. And backing into a spot
tends to take longer which will tick off other drivers.

Mine's sort of a fisheye lens, but there's still a blind spot.
My mother's SUV has a proximity sensor that beeps. I don't know
that she could function without it. I'm so used to using my
rearview mirror that I still use it more than the camera -
especially for backing out of my parents' long drive way. I
learned to do that using a rear view mirror and I have the
spacing down pat following the border of the yard to the
driveway. I just can't switch to the camera for driveways. LOL

No, it doesn't, it's just a question of doing it often enough
and getting used to doing it. Also, you leave a lot quicker
which will counter the being a bit slower to get into your spot.
But the time difference really isn't anything to write home
about.

While it is on the person backing out to be careful so I go
slowly if I can't see.
But what kills me are either people who can clearly see I am in
the midst of backing out will continue to walk around the back
of my car. Or a car that pulls in the lane will go around my
car. Both should stop and allow me to finish backing out. I
can't tell you how many times I had to slam on my brakes because
I see a car or person directly behind me and I am already half
way out.

I hear you Zilla. I do this really silly thing as a pedestrian.
When I see a moving car, I don't walk into its path.
But that's just me. I have a totally irrational desire to stay
alive. ;)
