probably not. They actually did move him -and me- after he got
demoted. It went like this:
I work for a university. He was the department head for a
particular office within the university, not related to
students, but related to events and accounts and other such
things. The department is small. Just the department head, and
me, the assistant. He had a big, roomy, corner office with a
window that was much coveted. Then, he got demoted to just being
a regular professor, and it was determined that his big, roomy,
corner office with a window would better serve another
department head (who I will call Lewis), who was located at the
time in a small, cramped, windowless office.
So the Big Boss decreed that the two would switch offices after
the demotion happened. So Lewis, whose office was upstairs, was
moved to the big, roomy, corner office. My former boss, who I
will call Gary, was moved upstairs to the small, cramped,
windowless office. Gary now reports directly to Lewis. Jane is
the assistant to Lewis, and thus also assists the other faculty
members who fall under Lewis as needed. When they moved Lewis
downstairs, they had to also move Jane..to my desk. I was moved
to Jane's old desk..which is also directly next to Gary's new
office.
There was no other way to do it. Our building is very small,
with very limited office space. The faculty are scattered
through all three stories of the building, regardless of where
the department assistants sit.
In this whole process they also separated me from my other boss.
I am actually the assistant to two offices..the office Gary
formerly oversaw, and the office that handles program
advancement, which has a different boss entirely. Whenever they
hire someone to take over Gary's old position, I will be nowhere
near either of my bosses. It's very frustrating to me, because
it's sort of like I also got punished for Gary's
ineffectiveness. I lost my big desk and got squeezed into a much
smaller one, in a much noisier area, and still have to deal with
Ineffective Gary no matter how much I try to deflect him. My
still-existing boss has to communicate with me through e-mail
most of the time and I hardly ever see her because our offices
are now so far apart. So every time Gary creeps out of his
office to ask a question, I want to scream at him "if you knew
how to do your job to begin with, I wouldn't be stuck at this
tiny desk in a part of the building I don't like being
in"..which would probably be very much frowned upon.

She dislikes him asking me questions. I'm supposed to document
everything and send it to her when it happens. Which I've been
doing, but again, he seems to think there's no harm in asking me
to show him how to use a distribution list for the billionth
time since it's "just a small thing".
I'm dreading the first time he has to try to order new supplies.
Faculty are supposed to do all of their own ordering, but when
he was my boss I always did it for him because he'd make such a
mess of it if he had to do it himself. He has never even had to
fill out an order form. Jane will not do it for him because the
policy states faculty must do it themselves, so I know he will
try to get me to do it.

I have done both in the past..sadly, his ability to seemingly
remember he's supposed to bug Jane for stuff is much like his
ability to retain how to properly use Powerpoint. It fades away
in a matter of days. Either that or he just doesn't care to ask
anyone else since I am still so conveniently located near his
office.

You might just have to keep doing it. Basically, out stubborn
him. He knows he's supposed to bug Jane; he just bothers you
because it's easier.

How about you ask him "What did Jane say you should do?" in
increasingly exasperated tones? or be blunt: "I can't help you.
You need to ask your own assistant, Jane, or you should Google
it."

Make a sign that says, "Ask Jane" and attach it to a popsicle
stick. Wordlessly hold it up every time he comes into your
office to ask you for help (extra points if you can do it while
still working on what you were working on/avoiding eye contact,
too).
