Return from Maternity Leave - and I'm off again!

I have just returned to work after a 14 month maternity leave
(very usual here). However about 3 days after my return (sad
that I can pinpoint it so exactly . . .) I became pregnant
again! We definitely wanted another baby and are thrilled about
it - just anticipated it taking about 3-6 months of "trying",
raher than on the first go - however, I digress.
I am only about 7 weeks now and have my 12 week scan on 12th
April. I am planning on telling my boss after that, and
co-workers soon after too (if my last pregnancy is anything to
go by, I expect to start "showing" any minute anyway).
Obviously, I am entitled to have another baby and I know it
won't be totally unexpected by my colleagues. I am just a bit
worried about how to deal with any snide or passive aggressive
comments that I will be off on another maternity leave 8 months
after coming back . . .
For background, I am a lawyer in London and have been at my law
firm for nearly 12 years - I have made them a lot of money and
know my work is appreciated. I am not worried about any
"serious" consequences of this, rather I am looking for a way to
fend off any "jokey" comments (without any stupid "this is not
up for discussion" etc smackdown being offerred as a realistic
and sensible option . . .)

I really would be surprised if you got a lot of snide remarks. I
know a lot of women have been in the same situation in the
various places I've worked in London and it's always been fine,
people understand that children happen and life happens in
slightly unexpected ways.
I'd not worry about it now but wait if the situation rises. If
it does, you are protected by a lot of legislation in the UK.
But overall, I have never seen it being an issue anywhere I've
worked. Obviously that is anecdotal, but I hope it will be true
in your case too.

A similar thing happened to my sister. She came back from her
6-month maternity leave and was pregnant again 6 weeks later.
She got a lot of "you do know what causes this, right?" comments
to which she replied "No! Will you explain it to me?". Say it
with wide eyes and a stunned voice and they'll back down.

That happened to one of the professors where I work. She got
pregnant really, really soon after she had her first and came
back from maternity leave. No one said anything snotty to her
about it. Now that she's back from her second round of maternity
leave, a few people have made joking comments to her along the
lines of "so, are you going to be leaving for #3 soon?" but
that's been the extent of it.
I wouldn't worry about it. From the sound of things you have a
great track record with your company, and I'm sure your
co-workers will understand.

Two years apart is a pretty common age gap for kids. If
Maternity leave is 14 months (which I think is awesome, by the
way) then this kind of thing has got to be expected. If anyone
says anything just say something like "We're thrilled, we think
2 years apart will be just perfect!". You could even joke a bit
yourself, "I know! I might as well install a revolving door in
my office!"

I think you're going to be all right because extended maternity
leaves are expected over there. In my job it would be an issue,
but the culture is different (I was out about 8 weeks full-time
and a couple more part-time, and my coworkers were desperate for
me to be back because we just don't have a system in place to
deal with people being out long-term). Congratulations!

I think you'll be fine. With that much time in between and
you're a woman of childbearing age, I'd kind of expect it :) As
for comments just smile and say "we are just so blessed" lol.

favorite answer is, "Yes. And I like it."
