Instructor pay rate
By: hjesse Date: September 12, 2009, 1:04 pm

Do we need to meet before Thursday or can it be the primary
topic of discussion at our meeting on Thursday before club?
I still feel sort of strange discussing this since I am one of
the people being paid. If you all want to meet at 7:30 I can get
there around 8 and skip this conversation (and if that's the
case, Laura should also). It's up to all of you.
I proposed $10/week but I think at the end of last quarter I had
suggested $10/hr for the main instructor (usually me) and $5/hr
for the assisting instructor (Colin or Laura). I'm not sure if
we can afford this or not.
Since I am the one running the lesson and providing the material
I do quite a bit more work than whoever is assisting me that
week. This is another topic I feel should be discussed without
the teachers there.
If we need all of that money to go to Colin at first that's
fine. Or we could pay instructors by cash that we keep from
dues. This is probably something Steve and Dan should figure
out... maybe discuss it with Jeff and/or Mike D. too.

Well as the new Treasurer, I will have to find out more
information before we can make a good decision. Unfortunately,
using estimated values, it seems like we will not be able to
afford this.
Here is the break down:
At $30/week for 30 weeks that's $900.
If we are only charging $50/year for dues given 35 members
that's only $1750.
So paying instructors is about half of this income.
At best, with 50 members paying $60/year, that is still only
$3000.
This may seems like a lot, but after T-shirts, the club trip,
hiring a band for a social dance or whatever, it seems like we
may not be able to afford it.
However, if we find a fund raiser, we may be able to afford it.
Also, regardless of paying the instructors, it would be a good
idea to do fund raising! The more money we can get the more
cool stuff we can do!
So we should set aside the paying instructors issue until I can
figure out what we can afford and in the mean time focus our
efforts on fund raising ideas.
Regards,
Cherry

I agree with Jesse that we might be better off discussing the
topic without her and Laura. I am trying to get the eboard,
excluding Laura and Jesse, to meet before thursday (if possible)
so we can have an answer by thursday.
Worst case we will need to devote some time on thursday. We
should wait till everybody arrives and discuss other points of
interest first, then we can simply ask Jesse and Laura to step
away until we've reached a decision.
For Colin I believe we can get him into the gym for free
(without paying the $5) if we get him registered as an outside
instructor with the SLC office. And maybe we can even convince
RIT to pay him through their budget.

What about a lower rate of $20/week toward instruction?
Obviously I'm not teaching solely for pay, most of it is to
continue the RIT swing club, pass on swing dancing, and improve
our scene in Rochester. I'm just asking for a little bit of help
to pay for gas, time, and services.
It'd be great if we could get Colin paid for by RIT and not out
of the club money, not sure if that's possible.
Ask Dumont about how to get more money. I know that the money
for the club trip came from many sources and only some of it was
from club funds.
Fundraiser = yes! We will certainly charge for our live band
dance, but that might just make enough to pay for the band.

Ok, here is the latest news about instructor payment:
- According to the club budget assistant at SG we are allowed to
pay the instructors as far as she knows. There is some paper
work involved, but it is legal to the best of our knowledge. I
can double check with someone else, but I think Carol knows well
enough. It is our money and we should be allowed to do pretty
much whatever we want with it except for purchasing certain
things.
- However, the next problem becomes what we can afford. If we
come up with some good fund raisers, I don't have any problem
paying the instructors because when you are instructing, it's
work and that's fair. As of right now we are not in very good
financail standing.
So work on coming up with fund raising ideas and I sent out an
email about the Interactive Learning Grant that was posted.

Do you know how much we have in our bank account?
I have some cash to give you.
We can hold off on paying instructors until the end of the month
and re-evaluate what we can afford then.

Hey guys,
according Ryan Giglia in charge of club advising:
"We make it a general rule that we do not pay leaders of clubs.
I do not know of a time that we ever did this unless it was a
reimbursement for an expense. We also do not pay any coach or
instructor unless it is for a one time training specific to the
club discipline."
I've also heard of clubs being banned for this, which is why I
was concerned.
As for fundraising, perhaps I could set up a little "prom style"
photo booth at a few local dances with proceeds going to club?
Just an idea.

I will set up an appointment with Ryan to try and work out the
details on that. I spoke with Carol Giuliano who said it should
be fine, but I will check with with Ryan to be sure.
